REIMAGINING THE NONPROFIT WORKPLACE VIRTUAL ENGAGEMENT SERIES

We are honored to welcome Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who will help us kick off the series and discuss her Administration’s efforts around re-entry. The series begins with a conversation led by the CEOs of each hosting organization. These nonprofit leaders will delve into opportunities for transition in our sector, from how we once worked to how we can redefine the nonprofit workplace.

This engaging and interactive multi-part series will provide guidance to Michigan’s nonprofits as they consider re-entry into the workplace. Sessions will be grounded in equity as we balance the exploration of legal, HR and financial requirements as well as ways to strengthen team culture, redefine the work space and realign to mission.

This session will include time for Q&A.

Speakers:
  • Donna Murray-Brown, President and CEO, Michigan Nonprofit Association
  • Kyle Caldwell, President and CEO, Council of Michigan Foundations
  • Allandra Bulger, Executive Director, Co.act Detroit
  • Shamyle Dobbs, CEO, Michigan Community Resources
  • Courtney Kissel, Member, Dykema Gossett PLLC

PUBLIC POLICY

President Trump Signs Bill to Address the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP)

President Trump signed the Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act. The bill extends the loan forgiveness window to 24 weeks up from eight weeks. It also reduces the payroll requirement to 60 percent to qualify for forgiveness, down from 75 percent. During the signing ceremony, President Trump reiterated he still wants a payroll tax cut in the next relief package. MI U.S. Representatives Fred Upton, Dan Kildee, Jack Bergman, John Moolenaar, and Elissa Slotkin were co-sponsors of the legislation.

BA Data Dump

SBA shared its latest PPP statistics through Saturday, June 6. There is still no breakdown of nonprofit success rate. The amount of funding remaining: $130,681,819,671.

Positive Unemployment Numbers Could Threaten Next COVID Package

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported last week that the economy added 2.5 million jobs in May and the unemployment rate fell to 13.3 percent. This news signals the economy could be starting to recover as states begin to reopen, and budget hawks in Congress could use the numbers as an indication another economic relief package isn’t needed. Former White House economic adviser Stephen Moore said the jobs report “takes a lot of the wind out of the sails of any phase 4 -- we don't need it now. There's no reason to have a major spending bill.” It remains to be seen if Moore’s sentiments will be echoed by the administration or Republicans on Capitol Hill.

State Creates Online PPE Purchasing Platform

The Pure Michigan Business Connect (PMBC) program through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation has developed a portal specifically designed to support the personal protective equipment (PPE) needs of Michigan businesses as they start the process of re-opening. Through the free PMBC COVID-19 Procurement Platform, the PMBC team will work to connect those businesses in need of access to PPE – including face masks, face shields, gloves, goggles and other materials as necessary to ensure the health and safety of their employees and customers – with Michigan businesses that have supplier capacity to meet that demand. SNAP Used to Purchase Food Online

Michigan received approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service to allow SNAP recipients to redeem their food assistance benefits at Amazon.com and Walmart.com. In April, more than 1.4 million Michigan residents received food assistance benefits. In recent weeks, the state also has increased the monthly amount of food assistance for many households, provided new or additional benefits for the families of 900,000 children who qualify for free or reduced-price lunches at school, as well as made food assistance available to students in college Career and Technical Education programs.
