DTE Energy provides several assistance programs for Michigan seniors (age 62+) to manage energy bills, including the Shutoff Protection Plan (SPP), Winter Protection Plan (WPP), and Energy Efficiency Assistance (EEA) for free home upgrades. These plans help prevent service disconnection, offer flexible payment options, and in some cases, provide monthly bill credits for income-qualified seniors. 

Key DTE assistance programs for seniors:

• Shutoff Protection Plan (SPP) 62+: Designed to assist seniors (62+) in managing outstanding balances and provides year-round protection from service disconnection.
• Winter Protection Plan (WPP) 62+: Protects seniors from utility shutoffs during the heating season (Nov. 1 – March 31).
• Low Income Self-Sufficiency Plan (LSP): Allows income-eligible customers to pay a fixed amount based on their income and energy usage.
• Energy Efficiency Assistance (EEA) Program: Offers free energy-saving, home energy conservation services to help reduce utility bills.
• Medical Emergency/Critical Care: Provides service protection for up to 21 days if a household member has a certified medical emergency. 

Seniors can apply for these programs through the DTE Energy website or by calling DTE customer service. Additional state assistance is available via the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) through State Emergency Relief (SER).

THAW administers the Michigan Energy Assistance Program (MEAP), which provides direct bill payment assistance for heat and electricity for low-income Michigan residents.

This program provides:

- Help pay for utilities

Residents must first complete a State Emergency Relief (SER) application through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Apply for SER online or visit your local MDHHS office.

Then, complete the THAW application online or call THAW’s Utility Assistance Center to have an application mailed. THAW’s Utility Assistance Center specialists are available to support the completion of THAW’s assistance application and discuss affordable payment plans with those who qualify.

Are there any agencies that are currently able to assist a senior citizen with their DTE Bill in the Detroit area? They are owing about $800 dollars approximately. We are currently reviewing Julies List for agencies as well. Please let me know if there are any other agencies that may have funding.
