Dear MFN Members,

As you know, Sally Egler suffered a severe brain injury about ten days ago when she fell. Sadly, she passed away this morning. The family will schedule a celebration of Sally's life some time later. There will be much to celebrate, given all that she has contributed to us and to the community as a whole. Here's a hint of what some of those contributions were. This is taken from the 2018 WWIH program, the year Sally was one of the honorees.

Sally Egler, beyond the impact she has had during her 20 years as a respected teacher at Macomb Public High School, has been particularly active in the League of Women Voters. A member for 25 years, she has served as the League’s Vice-President and as Chair of the Voters Service Committee and has been the principal organizer of the forums the League sponsors to introduce voters to candidates seeking local elected offices. Sally has also been a member of the Macomb Zoning Board of Appeals, a volunteer at the West Central Illinois Arts Center, a reader for Western Illinois University’s Radio Information Services, a member of the Community/ University Partnership Program (CUPP) and a founding member of the Macomb Feminist Network. She received a Quality of Life Award for her leadership in changing city zoning codes to protect single-family neighborhoods.

Sally's contributions to the community are substantial. Many of us have also benefited individually from her kindness, her generosity of spirit, her insights, and her loving support. Her death will be experienced as a great loss.

With empathy,
Jan

Sally was, and is, an aspirational role model for me. I strongly suspect I’m not alone.

You are most certainly not alone William Thompson!  Even though I was not a close personal friend of Sally’s I held her  in the highest regard—her beautiful forthright presence, down to earth practical wisdom and fighting spirit, selfless dedication to making  her community more welcoming and just, her infectious humor and laugh.  I’ll never forget the hilarious Sumo wrestling story she told at an MFN meeting I think 🤣

And I won’t forget the giddy pizza party we had at Jan’s house counting the thousands of dollars made on a fundraiser in 2008 at The Brickyard for soon to be President Barack Obama!!

I found the lovely photo above of Sally and her husband Dave Egler on the WIU website.  It was taken when they set up a planned giving scholarship for history students so that they could travel abroad .  I’ll send link. It’s a wonderful article about all that travel and living abroad brought to their lives. They set up the scholarship as they wanted to help make possible such opportunities for others.

Thank you Jan for letting us know this tragic news but also thank you for reminding us of the larger than life impact on the world of your dear friend, the beautiful, fearless Sally Egler  🙏💙
