MFN Meeting Notes 11-8-25

Community Room, Macomb City Hall

Chair: Melanie Rawlins

Program

Dr. Anne Lefler, the Director of the WIU Goldfarb Center for the Performing Arts, is an Associate Professor with a doctoral degree in Theatre Studies. She is developing a program in Art Leadership in addition to her leadership and oversight of the GCPA. That role encompasses "season planning, marketing, audience development, recruiting, budgeting and the day-to-day operations" of the Center. She gave members an overview of the status of the Center as well as a comprehensive virtual tour of the facility.  Her understanding and enthusiasm for this project was unmistakable as she guided members through the building and explained its carefully planned, progressive, and flexible features. A state-of-the-art addition to the campus funded by the state, Anne reiterated the need for technical staff by March 9 when the structure will be substantially completed and the space can be occupied. Anne also noted the support of the city of Macomb, the identification of the Center as a regional arts center built for everyone, and the need for volunteer assistance as she—and we—move toward a 2026 opening.

Elisa Rasmussen reported that the Writing Women into History 2026 Nomination criteria and application form are now available. The deadline for nominations is Saturday, November 29, 2025, and the WWIH Reception is set for Saturday, March 7, 2026. Elisa asked that members spread the word and encourage nominations.

New Business

Given the anticipated loss of SNAP funding and the number of McDonough County families who depend on this assistance, MFN members discussed what they know about service agencies meeting the needs this situation is generating.  Members noted that WIRC-CAA, Genesis Garden, and the Salvation Army are stepping up. Though any food donations are welcome, the need for boxed goods like cereal, pasta, and such is greater right now. Because food from River Bend cost far less than from groceries, Sally Egler encouraged members to give money, rather than specific items to WIRC. Buying from River Bend also allows local groups to focus on items they need most urgently.

Announcements

Melanie provided an overview of the Schultz Foundation for Advancing Counseling, an organization she helped establish and in which she is still active. The Foundation’s mission is to promote excellence in counseling and to support mental wellness in Illinois. Further information about its many activities and the groups it supports is available at in...@advancingcounseling.org.

Jan noted that Sue Scott, Director of the Western Illinois Museum, has posted information about Beth Howard’s documentary Piowa, showing Sunday afternoon, November 16, at the museum. Beth, a contributor to TSPR Women’s Voices series, has a long history of promoting pie baking. She will be at the museum for a Q&A between screenings—and pie will be served. If you enjoy baking pies and want to contribute one to share for this event, contact Sue at in...@wimuseum.org. Sue suggests you contact her to reserve a seat as well.
