Colleagues,
Resolution SJR0013 is now in the Senate Higher Education Committee. This is a bipartisan resolution calling for the creation of a task force to explore the role of faculty librarians in academic libraries. As you know, the WIU administration sent layoff letters to all of our faculty librarians in August, and we are seeing the importance of faculty librarians questioned and challenged on several other campuses in Illinois and across the country. We need to reverse this trend for our students, our communities, and our faculty.
Specifically, the bill “creates the University Library & Professional Librarian Access & Transparency Task Force to examine the current state of libraries and professional librarianship on Illinois public university campuses and present a recommendation to the General Assembly to ensure that public academic libraries and the educational services provided by professional librarian faculty remains a viable and healthy benefit to Illinois students.“
We expect Senator Halpin to call the bill on Wednesday, March 5 at 8:30 a.m. To help support the resolution, we need witness slips in its favor.
