I am trying to boot and log in over ethernet with ssh -X machi...@beaglebone.local. This works with the 2017-02-12 image uSD.
I used Etcher to flash both the 2017-02-12 image and the 2018-08-20 image to uSD. With the 2018-08-20 uSD I am seeing the outboard three of four LEDs go solid blue. The inboard LED of the four is not lighting. However, they just stay solid -- no flashing.
With the 2017/2/12 image the 4 LEDs go solid and then I see the typical flashing during the boot process.

Is there a problem with the 8/20 image?

I am running this on an A6 BBB but I also tried it on a A5C BBB. Same results on both. I have a Xylotex DB25 cape on the board.

Help!!!

Thanks,
Alan

Hold down the "boot" button, your board just has a version of u-boot
(really old) in the eMMC that's doesn't understand the newer boot
scripts..

Robert,

Which button is the “boot” button? The picture I have labels them “Power” and “Reset”. Power is next to the RJ45 connector and reset is next to the board edge.

Is there one of the newer images that is small enough to flash on the A5 or A6?

Thanks,
Alan

Robert,

After I wrote the last message I found the “Boot” button on the picture. The problem is that it is under the DB25 cape.

So that just leaves erasing the eMMC's version of u-boot:

sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/mmcblk1 bs=1M count=10

Hi,Robert ,

When I used sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/mmcblk1 bs=1M count=10

i find my BBB can not start without SDcard(my BBB sys is debian 7.5  2G eMMC ),

but I insert SDcard(brun debian 8.7 machinekit  2017-02-12)  can start (debian 8.7)

when I burn debian 9.X into SDcard and insert to BBB , it's still can not start . sometimes  4 LED  bright。。

At present time , only debian 8.7 can be use..if I want to use BBB(without SDcard ). How can i do?

I'm just  bought a  USB TO TTL  line, and it will take a few days to get it.

Steps to creating Stretch uSD for CRAMPS or Xylotex (DB25)
Download stretch/machinekit image
burn image to uSD
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ssh
sudo apt-get install xorg
(logout/log back in ???)
If using rev C or later
reflash emmc with a recent version of stretch
else if USING Rev A5 or Rev A6 version of BBB erase the boot portion of emmc
   (sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/mmcblk1 bs=1M count=10)
restart/reboot
login to machinekit (ssh -X machi...@beaglebone.local)
run machinekit
choose config
run machinekit with config
scp good config files from alansmacmini to beaglebone directory
run machinekit with good config

But there is now UI starting I only get a running console on the hdmi output. I can log into machinekit but it seems empty. What UI system is used with this version?

There is no interface other than console on the image (as far as I know). But following the instructions below you should be able to run machinekit remotely.

Update to getting started.
Creating Stretch uSD

burn image to uSD
copy grow_partition.sh to BBB
sudo chmod ugo+=rwx grow_partition.sh
sudo ./grow_partition.sh
sudo reboot

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install uuid-runtime
sudo apt-get install ssh
sudo apt-get install xorg openbox

Now you should be able to log into beagle bone via ssh
(run machinekit, it will take a while to start unless you have already started X on your host machine)
machinekit

grow_partition.sh
