Applications are invited for a number of openings at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) for the
development of theoretical algorithms, software and models for quantum computers. This is an
opportunity for motivated individuals to join NPL’s Quantum Technologies Department within Dr
Ivan Rungger's team to work in the Quantum
Information Processing group in Teddington (London).
The work will be done in collaboration with
leading quantum computing companies and Universities.
The roles can be at different levels of seniority from Masters to Postdoctoral level, on a permanent
or fixed term contract basis.
The research will be within the following areas:
- Development of quantum computing algorithms and software for applications in
materials science, chemistry and machine learning
- Development of machine learning algorithms and software for automation of
quantum technologies
- Collaborative work with experimental teams at NPL, quantum hardware companies
and Universities
About you
You should have a Ph.D. or M.Sc. in computational physics, chemistry, mathematics, data science,
computer science, quantum technologies or related subjects. Required skills vary across the roles,
you will need to demonstrate expertise in at least one, and preferably more, of the following areas:
- Development of algorithms and software for materials or chemistry simulations and
their application
- Development of quantum computing algorithms and software
Development of machine learning algorithms and software
- Development of models and software for device simulations
For the more senior roles, an excellent publication track record will be important, as will be the
demonstration of the ability to work independently. The senior roles will also require excellent
leadership and communications skills, since you will need to mentor those with less experience
than you.
Across all roles you will be expected to develop commercial and academic collaborations
and support any bids we may be undertaking as well as propose your own bids.
