Dear Prof. Dr. Marquardt,
do you already have a date/time corridor in mind for the exam? Due to the Covid-Situation and the extension of the lecture period, it is not self-explanatory when exams will actually take place this semester.
Is it possible that you announce a date soon? This would make planning for the summer and exam period a lot easier!
Thanks in advance!
Best regards,
Adrian Kirchner

Hi Professor,
I wanted to ask for the same thing. Moreover, I am not even in Germany right now and to be honest I am not sure when and how I can reach there.
Can you please tell about the pattern of the exam? Like- offline, viva. online?
Thanks and regards
Khabbab

Dear Adrian Kirchner, dear FAU students,

I understand the concerns. Now, I emailed to the dean of studies (C. van Eldik) on May 19 that I plan to preferentially have a written exam or (if need be) oral exams.

To decide what is the best way forward, I would need to know who among the FAU students is definitely going to take the exam. If it is indeed ~60 students (this was the number initially), then oral exams are definitely out of the question, and I need to reserve multiple lecture halls, given the current constraints due to COVID (even lecture hall G holds only about half that under current rules, I believe).

Are you already able to sign up in meinCampus for the exam? Then I would announce that to everyone, and then would decide based on the approximate number of people who signed up.

Best regards,
Florian

Regarding possible dates, in case it is a written exam:

I was thinking about Jul 30/31, or August 3/4, or else sometime in the week August 10-14. I don't yet know about the lecture hall situation - that might be a tricky thing, since many lecturers will need multiple lecture halls simultaneously for their exams.

Dear Prof. Marquardt,

the exam is listed in meinCampus (the exam registration has started), but i can currently not register for your course. It should however be not too hard for you to get this fixed!
Regarding lecture halls, H11 is quite big too and can be booked for examinations as well. And, but i am sure you already know this, oral exams via Zoom are currently an option as well, this could be a good solution for people who are not able to travel here. Additionally, oral exams in a physical form can be held too.

Best regards,
Adrian Kirchner

Dear Professor,
I agree with Adrian that if possible, oral exam via zoom seems like a viable solution for those who are not able to travel right now.
Otherwise, I would like to suggest to delay the exam  a little, like the end week of August, so that we can have a bit more time to travel.
However, I dont understand how the written exam for a coding class will be taken. Maybe you can give us a hint on it and that will be very helpful.
Thanks and regards
Khabbab

@Adrian: OK, thank you for the info.

So, to recap, you are a physics student (?) and you cannot sign up for this exam in meinCampus yet, even though it is displayed there?

@all: The issue is, we always have to be consistent, so if one person takes an oral exam, everyone must take an oral exam. And if it is more than 10 persons, it is just too much time to spend on oral exams (my schedule is very full). So that is why I want to estimate the demand.

Regarding lecture halls, I don't even know H11 - where is that?

In the past, we always had written exams. They of course did not involve programming. Rather it would be questions like "given this scenario, an given this simple reinforcement learning approach, predict how..." - so there were more mathematical/analytical questions. I have to see what I do this time.

Yes, i am a physics student, currently enroled in M.Sc. physics and i can not register. I can confirm that this is the case for B.Sc. physics as well.

H11 is located at the math department.

@Adrian K. : OK, thank you! I have asked my secretary to figure out what is wrong with meinCampus, so that we can activate the registration - and then we can announce it here and find out how many will register for the exam. Based on that, I can decide written vs. oral.

@all: My secretary Mrs Murphy tells me it is now open in meinCampus (currently displayed as a written exam 120min – but I want to decide based on the number of people who register).

Can you please all try (again) to register there, so I can see the demand?

Dear Prof. Marquardt,

I still can't find the exam in the list in meinCampus but I would like to take an exam.

@all: Apparently, you can find the exam in meinCampus under

Masterstudiengang Physik, Modulnummer 668977

"Machine Learning for Physicists"

12 persons registered so far. Please let me and Gesine.Murphy know if there is still some trouble for any of you.

@Raisa Rubinova: I have asked Mrs Murphy to try and get the exam registration also opened up for people in your study program.

Dear all,

after 51 of you have registered for the exam, it will of course be a written exam, and it will take place simultaneously in two lecture halls. We have now figured out a series of possible time slots. Could you please help us by indicating which slots you are able to make, in the following poll? [please do not be picky: only reject those slots that are absolutely impossible for you, typically because of the simultaneous scheduling of another exam]

Best regards,
Florian Marquardt

Dear Professor,
I am not entirely sure but I guess I could edit the results from other users. Maybe the poll is open to edit for all, Please check.
And is it possible to add a date from mid August in the poll?
Thanks
Khabbab

Dear all,

we got 34 replies on the scheduler. The exam will be either on July 25 or August 1. However, before we finally decide and announce it in the coming days, Mrs Murphy will contact some of you (who indicated 'no' on any of these dates) why exactly you cannot make it – whether there is indeed e.g. a conflicting exam (serious issue) or whether you understood this to be just preferences (which carries less of a weight). We will then decide.

Note also that there will be, as usual, a repetition exam just before the start of the winter term lectures, for anyone who cannot make it now (or who fails this first exam).

Best regards,
Florian
