My wife makes a lot of Airpod calls to her buddy, oddly she never calls me, and her buddy often complains of loud, sudden background noses. She’s been dealing with this for a several years. I found that the solution is to switch microphone mode to voice isolation mode explained via the link below. This works well. If you have a phone with a home button, sweep up, not down, to get to the Control Center. Note that this may work with any manufacturer’s earphone microphone (I’ve tried two) and iPhone microphone regular and speaker calls. Note that the change of mic mode is persistent, which is what you would want.
My question to you is, is there a way to make the change without using the Control Center? The change is accessible only through the Control Center and only when making a call or using FaceTime. That seems awfully limited and obscure. I would expect the mic mode to be changeable at any time, via settings.
I do not think that any of this can be done with your Mac. The software doing the audio input processing must be iPhone and iPad only. Maybe Apple will transfer the fix to MacOS as well. It looks as though Voice Isolation has been available for a year now.
