I got tired of firewalled articles and added Apple News+ to our family’s Apple One subscription. Specifically, I changed Apple One Family ($26) to Apple One Premier ($38) which gained Apple News+, Apple Fitness+, and 2TB of iCloud+ storage. Subscriptions are nasty habits, so I got rid of another (SiriusXM) to offset the increase.

I’ve found that using Apple News+ to get around firewalls is a bit clumsy. Unless you use Apple News+ to read your news (I use Google, Twitter, Chrome and the like) you have to open the firewalled article in Safari (not Chrome) and then pick the share box, scroll through the options, including clicking on an ellipses to select “open in Apple News.” Additionally, some firewalled articles are not included with Apple News+ even though that periodical is included as an Apple News+ channel. Here is an example of that -

Seems like a good deal for $12/month extra although the jury is still out.

Does anyone in the group use Apple News+ to get around article firewalls and if so, what method do you use?
Is anyone in the group paying the $38 for Apple subscription top tier and if so, are you happy with it?

I have the Apple One Premier plan and get a lot of joy out of it. I do it primarily for the storage, Apple TV+, Fitness+ (love pilates with Marimba), and Music. Haven’t been that big on News+ but I bet with my new-found knowledge that you can find an article in Safari with a paywall and then maybe get it to open in News+, I might use it more! My grandson just joined my Apple family so Arcade is finally getting a workout.

Even with 2TB, with 6 people in the family, I had to buy a step up in storage because we all have documents and desktop in iCloud. Sadly, Apple only offers +6TB as the next step for another $30/month.

Overall, even though we pay a lot, we get a LOT of use out of the Premier plan.

We are the same as Allison.

Also had to bump up the family storage for another $30‼️

We love Apple News Plus.  It’s our primary (only?) source of news.  It’s actually a hassle when sharing a news article to the unprivileged 😉 folks.  I have to dig for the web original and hope that it’s not paywalled.

Other than the NYT, most of the major publishers are available in Apple News Plus.  Along with my fave magazines:  Family Handyman and WOOD.

I like using Apple TV’s search engine for shows and movies.  It lets me know which streaming service is hosting that particular content.  Other than Netflix, which does not partner (share).

In a few years, or sooner we will have to divorce our kids as they gain spouses or minions.  Hopefully the iCloud switch will be seamless for them.

Sincerely,

  — Niraj
