Fellow MacHackers,
Ken Prager (Hughes) used to call these situations a 'recursive hell.'
To scan a bunch of 35mm slides and negatives, I bought a Nikon LS4000-ED - supposed to be a great scanner. Okay, they haven't been made for so many years that Nikon stopped supporting them long ago. But, there are software that will operate the scanner on modern computers (SilverFast 9).
Great! But...the software maker said that to be able to operate the scanner fully, I have to upgrade the scanner firmware, and he graciously sent me updaters for both Mac and Windows. The scanner uses an IEEE 1394 connection. I don't have a Windows box that has one of those.
I've hooked up the scanner to my Mac (Mac Studio M1) via 3 conversion cables that combined, convert the IEEE 1394 to Thunderbolt.
Great! But...the Mac firmware updater requires a 68000 chip (or emulator?) to run. And just my luck, my B&W G3 won't boot anymore.
I've tried to run the updater in Crossover (Wine under the hood) but it doesn't do anything.
I've spent hours trying to resurrect the G3, but it won't even
boot off a 10.1 startup CD (external CD drive).
Before I spend more time and money on this, I am asking for the
collective wisdom of the MacHacker crowd. What say you?
BTW, I neglected to say who this is...

Very nice Al! Even including the Link about his hardware. I've been using Vuescan for decades. Works great for my ancient Epson Perfection U636 Flatbed scanner (my goto device) and my New Epson 3850 Printer/scanner - I use Vuescan for both. I know I did not pay $150 dollars for it way back when, but I have been upgraded. free, all these years.
