Thisis a list of college football venues with non-traditional field colors. Traditionally, college football is played on grass fields. As technology advanced, the use of various kinds of artificial turf as a playing surface became more and more popular. With the artificial turf came the ability to have field colors other than green. Although many programs that choose an artificial surface for games do keep a green surface, a few have chosen other colors.

It is common for the end zones to be painted a different color, but as of the 2015 season only seven programs have their field color other than the traditional green.[1] Six of the programs participate in the NCAA and one in the NAIA.[2]

Other programs outside of college football have non-traditional colors. Lincoln College Preparatory Academy in Kansas City, Missouri has blue turf with yellow sidelines surrounded by a red track. Barrow High School in Barrow, Alaska also has a blue turf, as do high schools in Hidalgo, Texas; Santee, California; Lovington, New Mexico;[16] Ravenna, Ohio; Colonia, New Jersey; Oxford, Michigan; and Spotsylvania, Virginia.[17] West Salem High School in Salem, Oregon has a black field.[18] St. Mary's Preparatory in Orchard Lake Village, Michigan has red turf, as do Edgewood High School in Ellettsville, Indiana[19] and Ludlow High School in Ludlow, Kentucky.[20] Trona High School in Trona, San Bernardino County, California has an all-dirt field, the only one in the United States outside of Alaska.[21] Belle Vernon Area School District uses a gold turf with black accents.[22] Tenino High School has a black turf football field.[23] Moore Catholic High School in Staten Island, New York unveiled its red turf field in 2021.[24]

The Nebraska Danger of the Indoor Football League also play on a black field, while the Trenton Freedom of the Professional Indoor Football League began play in 2014 on a red field. From 2014 to 2016, the L.A. KISS of the Arena Football League played on a silver field. Two teams currently in the National Arena League use non-traditional field colors. The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks moved to Allentown, Pennsylvania in 2015, and began using a black field, while the Massachusetts Pirates began play in 2018 on a dark blue field. The Buffalo Lightning of American Indoor Football, for convenience purposes, used a plain Haudenosaunee-purple field with no field markings except for goal lines; the Lightning play their games on a hastily converted box lacrosse court.

In recent decades, a number of college football programs across the country have gone against the grain by opting for an unconventional field color on its playing surface versus the traditional green grass or artificial turf.

On Tuesday, SUNY Morrisville added its name to the list by unveiling its new, eye-popping black turf at Drake Field. SUNY Morrisville (an NCAA Division III member) is based about 30 miles southeast of Syracuse in upstate New York.

Carthage College proudly presents the newly revamped Wiers Family Stadium and Barbara Madrigrano Field, a sporting gem nestled on the northwest corner of Carthage's picturesque campus along Sheridan Road. Steeped in history, the field serves as Carthage's first-ever on-campus field since its grand opening game against Millikin University on April 5, 1997.

The Black Knight Blog is an initiative provided by the Office of Athletic Communications to offer Army fans an even more in-depth look into the everyday happenings here at West Point. The intent of this blog is to keep readers informed with a light, personal touch that will further enhance the fan experience. Please enjoy and send any comments, questions or concerns to tracy....@usma.edu. We welcome your feedback!

Hello Black Knight Blog fans. With apologies to all my co-workers and friends in the chilly Northeast right now, Tim Volkmann coming to you live from the 60-degree and sunny day here and Orlando, Fla. I'm with the lacrosse team right now as they prepare to play an exhibition against the US National Team on Saturday following a scrimmage with Duke.

It was an early morning for this athletics communications professional as the bus pulled away from the Truxtun Lacrosse Center at 0415. That meant setting the alarm (on my sweet new Droid phone) for 0315 and climbing out of my nice cozy bed. As I opened my front door, I was greeted by a blast of cold air that reminded me how lucky I was to be heading south for a couple days.

We arrived at White Plains airport and the Jet Blue people were bright and chipper as over 40 members of the squad filed their way past the counters and security check with ease. Originally scheduled to leave at 0655, we were delayed about 20 minutes because when the plane we were on was parked last night, someone forgot to empty the waterlines that supply the restrooms on the plane and they froze. We had to wait for someone to come thaw them out before we were up, up and away.

If you have never flown Jet Blue, I highly recommend it. There is a DirecTV screen on each seat, complete with satellite radio and they give you all the snacks and drinks you can eat. After listening to some music for a while, my seatmate Dana Putnam and I opted to do some reading. He was just starting In The Company Of Heroes, written by one of the main players in the story Black Hawk Down, Mike Durant, while I was cracking open John Grisham's The Client (Thanks Shak). A hundred or so pages and two bags of Cheetos later, we were descending into Orlando International Airport.

Everyone collected their luggage and boarded the bus that was going to take us to the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex (see above picture) where we'll be playing tomorrow. After a quick stop for a bite to eat, we pulled into the complex. Whichever direction you looked, there were baseball, softball and soccer fields as far as the eye could see along with a large stadium that is the spring training home of the Atlanta Braves. Let's just say the folks at Disney don't mess around. State-of-the-art everything to say the least.

While the guys ran through practice, I strolled around to take a look at the rest of the complex while enjoying the mild weather. Watching practice, the guys looked sharp and ready to go for tomorrow's action. At noon, the guys will play a controlled scrimmage opposite the Blue Devils, before scrimmaging the US National Team three hours later.

And lacrosse fans, don't worry. Army head coach Joe Alberici will be on the Black Knight sidelines for both contests, despite being an assistant coach for the national team. However, former Army All-American Adam Fullerton will see some time between the pipes against his old team so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens.

Tonight, we are heading out in a bit to grab a bite at a local barbecue joint called Bubbalou's Bodacious BBQ, hosted by former Army lacrosse standout Jim Pappafotis (USMA '78). Bring on the pulled pork for this guy.

Mady Salvani at the keyboard today ... sorry about being late but I was attending a Museum, Historical, and Memorialization Committee meeting all afternoon ... it is an interesting group and the decision that have to be made approving something as small as a plaque for a locker to a life-size paintings.

I just returned to the office with the sun trying to break through, but shortly after I looked out my window to see a full-blow winter storm. I can't see the mountain and the ground is quickly being covered in white.

I like snow storms but don't like driving in them and they always seem to come when Army has a basketball game or I am on deadline for a project. That makes it too hard for me to run home and enjoy the storm. First I have to make certain everyone gets home safely, then I can enjoy it.

In the past I would drag my dogs out for long walks, shovel out my house then a few elderly neighbors. When I got back home and tried to take the dogs for another long walk, they ran from me because they wanted to just sleep. I would join them on the couch with a good book and snuggle with them under the blankets.

January at West Point has been called "Gloom Period" by the Cadets as long as I can remember. There are days when everything around here is grey looking. And one of the reason I like winter storms is the fact they leave a fresh blanket of snow to make everything look clean and alive.
