After SAO was cleared by Kirito and Asuna was found in ALO, why didn't they just take her NerveGear off? After all, it's ok to die in ALO and the NerveGear shouldn't fry the brain of the user after they die in-game anymore. So Asuna should've been completely fine right?

The problem was that they didn't know what was wrong with Asuna at first and certainly didn't know that she was on ALO, if they did then they probably would have found about Sugou's experiments. even when Yui confirmed she could detect "mommy" up in the tree there was little time before Asuna's and Sugou's wedding. so at that stage Kirito's proof was

a blurry picture which has someone who looks like Asuna, easily explained away by ALO's developer as being a Titania NPC who is apart of the Grand Quest (remember that Oberon's supposed to be waiting at the top and Titania is his wife in Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream so it would make sense that Titania would be waiting aswell)

a Navigation Pixie saying that her "mommy" is up in the tree, again could be explained off as a game object's bugged reaction to possible future content given that Kirito's Character is already bugged having it's SAO stats.

given that in the past when the NervGear was removed the player was killed I would think Asuna's parents would err on the side of caution. even if Kirito explained who and what Yui is it, it might be too unreal for them to accept the risk of Asuna's brain getting fried, at least not before the wedding, which I would think Sugou would get called in to give his thoughts, where we know Asuna waking up works against him (remember that she hates him and if she was to wake would call off the wedding).

Now, aside from what I said above, how Sugou could explain away Kirito's evidence that Asuna was trapped in ALO, he also has inside knowledge of the NervGear having not only access to the technology as being the head of Rect Progress but he also worked under Kayaba. He could easily add more worry to Asuna's parents that there could be possible brain damage because of how the NervGear works.

And up until this point there was no indication that the NervGear still wouldn't fry her brain if removed. Clearing SAO only allowed (if not by force) players to log out. While yes, Kirito did die in ALO, this can be argued that Kirito didn't technically die, as his Remain Light was still there and was resurrected by Leafa. One can compare this as being the same as one using the Divine Stone of Returning Soul (resurrect item Kirito got hoping to revive Sachi) while in the Death Game, just with a much longer timer (in ALO it was 10 minutes).

The reason they didn't remove Asuna's NervGear is because it would still fry her brain. In the beginning of the anime, Kayaba explained that the NervGear will create an electrical shock if it is removed while in use. When SAO was beat, the players were able to log out of the system. If instead of logging out, the players had their NervGear removed while in use, they would die. Asuna was one of the few that couldn't log out because she was trapped in ALO. If you watch the ALO arc, there is a scene where Asuna tries to log out using the administration console. If she was successful, she would have been able to remove the NervGear without a problem.

That being said, there was still the case where dying in SAO caused the player to actually die in the game. This was caused by the game itself having that in its program. Proof of this is in Kirito's death within ALO. He still had the NervGear on, but he didn't actually die. In this case, he could die all he wanted in-game as long as no one removed his NervGear.

To sum it up, removing the NervGear while still in use would kill the user. The issue with dying in-game was just a SAO specific program. With the creation of ALO, the dying-in-real-life program was removed. Along with ALO came the AmuSphere, a safer alternative to the NervGear. The AmuSphere was designed to eliminate the die-when-removed risk. That's why you don't die if you have the AmuSphere removed during gameplay. So, basically, AmuSphere and ALO are safe, but the NervGear and SAO are programed to kill you.

Aside from being the second in command of the Knights of the Blood Oath, the strongest guild in Aincrad, she is also the adoptive mother of Yui and the love interest of Kirito.

Asuna comes from a wealthy family consisting of her parents and older brother, where her father is the President of RECT. Inc. Since childhood, she grew up with Sugou Nobuyuki, but unknownst to her parents, she secretly hates him as he sexually harasses Asuna. Eventually at some point, Asuna's parents decided he would be her future partner while still completely oblivious of his true nature. Asuna has a complicated relationship with her family as she has a strained relationship with her mother, but is more close to her father. Asuna also had a close bond with her grandparents on her mother's side, always going to their home for summer holidays. As for education, she attended an all-girls school. On the day Sword Art Online was released, Asuna's brother intended to buy the game for himself, but had to attend business meetings, and thus allowed Asuna to enjoy the game instead. Due to this, Asuna along with everyone became trapped in Sword Art Online.

In the beginning, Asuna hated being trapped in the game, crying herself to sleep and tried her hardest to stay alive, not wanting to die in-game as well as losing her identity of who she is. She first met Kirito and Agil with Diavel. They became The Flash and The Black Swordsman during the first boss fight and as she and Kirito partnered up together for the first time and was present when Kirito was declared a Beater (a combination of a Beta Tester and Cheater).

While being trapped in SAO, Asuna put all her time and effort into becoming one of the strongest player, gaining the nickname "Lighting Flash". She later joined the Knights of the Blood Oath, a medium-sized guild acknowledged as the strongest guild in Aincrad and eventually became second in command. Throughout her time in SAO, Asuna made several friends, including her best friend Lizbeth while gaining the attention of many admirers. Being extremely attractive and one of the few girls that play SAO, she received many marriages proposals, but always turned them down. Asuna and Kirito also developed a somewhat strained relationship in the beginning as both had different perspectives of being trapped in SAO. Originally, Asuna hated being trapped in the virtual world, believing the more they were trapped it was another day lost in the real world until she was inspired by Kirito, showing her life could still be enjoyed. The relationship between them quickly began to change, and as time passed, the two fell in love and they soon married in-game.

Once they got married in-game, Asuna and Kirito quickly take a leave of absence from the Knights of the Blood Oath and decide to honeymoon on the 22nd floor, buying a cabin together. During this time, they met a lost little girl named Yui. Asuna is greatly concerned about Yui and the safety of her family and is upset to learn of Yui's amnesia. Despite the circumstances, Asuna and Kirito quickly come to develop a strong and close bond with Yui and begin living together as a real family much to Asuna's happiness. However, Asuna remains concerned about Yui's amnesia and well being, and becomes upset knowing they must soon leave her once finding her family. But she is reassured by Kirito and together they begin searching for Yui's family. As a start, the married couple decided to take Yui to the 1st floor of Aincard to the Town of Beginnings, but encounter problems with the Liberation Army guild. Asuna and Kirito learned of the Army's corruption from the second in command, Yulier, who begs of Kirito and Asuna's assistance in rescuing her husband and the guild's leader, Thinker, from a secret underground dungeon.

The two agree to help and with Yulier and Yui, they go to rescue Thinker. Eventually, they manage to locate Thinker, but are attacked by a ridiculously strong boss monster. Asuna and Kirito attempt to fight the boss and order Yulier and Thinker to teleport to safety with Yui. However, the boss was too strong and nearly kills Asuna and Kirito, until surprisingly, they are saved by Yui. She reveals herself to be an AI and was suppose to be a counselor to those suffering in the game, but to unknown problems wasn't allowed to interact with the players. During the two years she watched how everyone was suffering, but noticed that Asuna and Kirito were different and wanted meet them. Realizing Yui truly has real human qualities despite being an AI, Asuna and Kirito become her adoptive parents. However, due to saving her adopting parents, Yui is now unorganised by the Cardinal System and is ordered to be deleted. Asuna is devastated and completely breaks down into tears as Yui is deleted from the system. Thankfully, Kirito manages to prevent Yui from being deleted, turning her into a game object. And for the rest of the Aincrad Arc, Yui's heart is worn around Asuna's neck as a necklace.

Since then, Asuna and Kirito return to their lig cabin to enjoy the rest of their honeymoon, but are ordered to return to face a deadly boss fight as the game was shown to have become more dangerous. Shortly after the boss fight, Kirito unraveled shocking news to everyone, revealing that Commander Heathcliff of Knights of the Blood Oath was Akihiko Kayaba. While Asuna along with the rest of the players who were paralyzed, Akihiko Kayaba gives Kirito a chance to free everyone from SAO, promising their freedom if he manages to defeat him. Asuna is against the deal and becomes devastated when Kirito requests so she can't commit suicide if he died from failing to gain everyone's freedom.
