Hi to every one,

I just tried to install Macaulay2 on my computer (with Ubuntu), but apparently something went wrong. I got the following output in the line command.

Macaulay2, version 1.11
--file search path directories:
--    /home/pini/Desktop/Macaulay2-1.11/share/Macaulay2/Core/
--    /home/pini/Desktop/Macaulay2-1.11/share/Macaulay2/
/home2/dan/src/M2/M2/Macaulay2/d/startup.m2.in:619:6:(0):[1]: error: can't load setup.m2
/home2/dan/src/M2/M2/Macaulay2/d/startup.m2.in:619:6:(0):[1]: --entering debugger (type help to see debugger commands)

Some of the basic commands can be executed (e.g. the sum of two numbers), but for instance when I type the following line

R = QQ[X,Y,Z]

I got the following error

stdio:1:5:(1): error: expected pair to have a method for 'SPACE'

I do not know how to fix it.

Many thanks for any suggestions or advice.

Best regards,

Alessandro Pini

You probably installed it manually, instead of subscribing to our repository for automatic
updates, and installed just one of the two required *.deb files.  They come in pairs: one for the
architecture independent files (common), and one for the architecture dependent files.

Hi,

Many thanks for the quick answer. However I'm not very expert so I did not understand it completely.

What I did was to download the .tar file and run it in my terminal. Unfortunately I do not have the root access on this computer, therefore I could not follow the other method (that probably allows an automatic update).

Could you explain me how I should modify the procedure that I followed in order to completely install Macaulay2 ?

Many thanks

Best regards,
