I'm assuming the Emacs instructions should work, in which case:

http://www.math.uiuc.edu/Macaulay2/doc/Macaulay2-1.6/share/doc/Macaulay2/Macaulay2Doc/html/_using_sp__Macaulay2_spwith_spemacs.html

So try (load "M2-init") and M-x M2 to start a Macaulay2 session. If
that doesn't work you may need to do something like

(add-to-list 'load-path "/usr/local/share/emacs/site-lisp/")

adjusting the paths to make sense for your install.

Thanks Wouter!

I am looking at the emacs tutorial. So I typed "emacs" in Terminal and emacs started running. It says in the link you mentioned that "If you are a newcomer to emacs, you should spend a few minutes going through the emacs tutorial"... I still don't know how to get M2 to run. Once I run emacs, and start typing, the red message shows up saying

;; This buffer is for notes you don't want to save, and for Lisp evaluation.
;; If you want to create a file, visit that file with C-x C-f,
;; then enter the text in that file's own buffer.

I typed (load "M2-init") and pressed enter; nothing happens. In the file "M2-emacs-hlp.txt" it says that

We assume you have taught emacs how to find Macaulay2's files, as described in
the previous sections, and that emacs is loading the file M2-init.el
successfully.

I am not sure what previous section the manual is referring to. I would appreciate some further help.

Thanks again!

When you ran M2 from the terminal, did you run "setupEmacs()"  (without the quotes)?  I think that is mentioned in the readme file for macosx release (on the disk image).  If not, then we need to put fix that!

After doing this, you need to exit M2, and then log off and then log on.  aquamacs should then work with M2.  I have set my  f11 and f12 keys to not be used by Launchpad, Expose, etc (I think this is explained in that same readme file).  At that point,  in aquamacs, hitting the f12 key should start M2.  If it doesn't, please let us know.  Alternatively, you should be able to: press option and X keys at the same time (in emacs), and then type M2, and then the return key.  That should start Macaulay2.

Best,

Mike

Could someone shed a light on how to run M2 using Aquamacs?

Thanks a lot!

P.S. I am using Mac OS X 10.8, if that is relevant here.

Thank you very much, Mike. Everything works now. The problem was that my F12 key wasn't functioning properly. So I fixed it using the instructions in the following page:
