Dear Macaulay2 users,

I'm a PhD student at the University of L'Aquila (Italy).

I need to install Macaulay2 on my latop. I have Windows7.

I have installed cygwin and I downloaded Macaulay2 version 1.4 from

http://www.math.uiuc.edu/Macaulay2/

but I can not install it. Does somebody know how I can do? Could yoy
show me what I have to do step by step?

Thanks,

Francesca Di Giovannantonio

The procedure recommended at

http://www.math.uiuc.edu/Macaulay2/Downloads/Microsoft-Windows/Cygwin/index.html

does not involving downloading Macaulay2 yourself, but instead, leaves
that task to the cygwin setup program, so I wonder whether you
followed the instructions there, and if so, which step failed and what
the error message was.

Really, the easiest solution might be to get Ubuntu Linux running on
your Laptop. Installing it these days is as easy as booting a DVD and
pressing "OK" a few times. After that you will have an easy task of
installing the Ubuntu package of Macaulay2.

Just an idea...
Cheers,
Thomas

Hi,
commalg.org has given a very easy and quick way to install Macaulay2
in windows (They talk about 95, 2000, XP and Vista, but it works for
windows 7 as well). Only thing is that you should go to
http://www.commalg.org/m2win/ and just follow instructions. In 5
minutes I had Macaulay2 up and running in Windows 7.
Before that I followed instructions given in Macaulay2 website (http://
www.math.uiuc.edu/Macaulay2/Downloads/Microsoft-Windows/Cygwin/index.html)
for windows users but that process took 7 hours for me and finally it
didnt work.
This must be a good news for windows users.
Thanks to commalg.org!
Cheers,
Chandana

I'm not sure if you ran in to the same problem I did, but on one
Windows 7 machine I had to specify the full path to Macaulay2-key
(even if running setup.exe from the same directory as the key):
setup.exe -K C:\Users\brandon\Downloads\Macaulay2-key

Thanks you! I have done!
I have created a virtual machine with Ubuntu and I have downloaded Macaulay2 there.
Thanks again.

Hi,

I followed the procedure given in http://www.math.uiuc.edu/Macaulay2/Downloads/Microsoft-Windows/Cygwin/index.html. I added http://macaulay2.com/Repositories/cygwin in box entitled "Choose a Download Site" and I got such note " Unable to get setup.ini from macaulay2.com". What should I do?

Thanks

I just tried it on my Windows 7 computer, and it works.  The sad thing about
cygwin's setup program is that the error message about downloading setup.ini
failing doesn't give the complete URL that it tried, so we can't tell whether you
misspelled the URL.  Did you type it or cut and paste it?  It might even be that
you misspelled it the first time, got it right the second time, and it still doesn't work,
in which case, starting over from scratch might be a good idea.  I don't know a good
way to audit what cygwin's setup is doing, but if you futz with it a bit more and it
still doesn't work, post again and I'll try to think of some way to audit it.

Hi,

I have a possible answer. I encountered the same problem when installing M2 on XP, and I used the setup-86.exe from cygwin.com. Then I found an old version of cygwin whose installer is called setup.exe, and it worked. You may want to try that.

Hello,

I am installing Macaulay in Windows 8. I followed all the procedure and using cgwin it seems that the packages have been installed.

When I enter the created folders, nevertheless, I only have one file in Macaulay2 and one in Macaulay2-icons which have the same name of the folder and are of tipy tar.bz. So I cannot start the emacs.

Does somebody know what I did wrong?

Thanks

Simone

Sorry for the late reply.  It seems to me that if you get a file whose name has the form *.tar.bz, then
the thing your cygwin setup program is misbehaving in some strange way.  But what you could
try is opening the file and unzipping it.  Perhaps Windows knows how to do that, perhaps not.  If
not, then the "tar" program of cygwin does.  The command would be something like
"tar xjf foo.tar.bz", and should be run in an empty directory.  Be prepared to move the resulting
files to the desired location.
