Join Today's Day of Action for Safe
and Sensible Corrections Reform!Today over 100 PSJ members are meeting with roughly two-thirds of Oregon’s legislature. Please join them in asking your legislator to support smart public safety reforms.
Oregon has an urgent need to address skyrocketing prison growth. Oregon’s prison population is expected to increase by more than 2,300 people in the next decade, which would mean a minimum of $600 million in new expenses.
Our prison growth is starving the rest of the public safety system from needed resources. It is time we strengthen things like community-based victim services, addiction treatment, community corrections, re-entry programs and mental health services. If we are going to be smart on crime, we need to shift resources to local interventions best equipped to build safe and healthy communities.The Governor’s bipartisan Commission on Public Safety recommended a package of reforms that would move Oregon in the right direction. Their recommendations would flatline prison growth over the next decade and reinvest savings into cost-effective and proven programs to reduce future crime.
