Fair Chance for All –Update and Action Alert

Fair Chance for All Campaign tops 6000 signatures

The Fair Chance for All Campaign has gathered more than 6000 petition signatures in support of the Ban the Box campaign.  The 6000 signatures represents thousands of conversations on the door step, at bus and Max stations and speaking to hundreds of people at events across the City. A special thanks goes the Bus Project Fellows who worked on the campaign over g during the  summer;  to Working America who had hundreds of conversations on door steps across the city,  and to Oregon Trades Women who have consistently collected signatures in the community.

Although the petition is not legally binding, it does show the strength of support in the community to pass our ordinance to Ban the Box on applications and give people with criminal records a Fair Chance.

We will be collecting signatures on the Fair Chance for All up until the Hearings before City Council: Keep asking  your  neighbors and friends to sign the petition. Download the petition on www.fairchanceforall.com

City of Portland Fair Chance for All

After positive meetings with the City commissioners and Mayor Charlie Hales, the city is currently working on drafting the Ordinance that will go to Council. With the City’s cooperation on the Ordinance, we expect to have the Ordinance before city council by the end of the year. The Mayor even gave a shout out to the campaign, by talking about it and the Biden Merkley Rally yesterday!

We will be inviting all Endorsing Organizations to review the City’s proposed Ordinance when it is released. We expect a draft by mid-October. Watch this space: meeting date to be announced.

We need to hear from you

If you have a story about how an arrest or conviction record has affected your ability to find a job or housing, we want to hear from you. Personal stories of people who have done their time, and are trying to get back into society and still have difficulty overcoming the barriers are very important.

If you have a story to tell, contact Patty Katz, on patty....@gmail.com

If you haven’t done so already, please take a photo with our downloadable photo petition sheet here.
