Hi Folks,

Is there anything out there that is a dependable OSX equivalent to
Xbench under Windows?

Anything other than CheckMate, please. I've never gotten along with this
tool.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Regards,

Will

I think the answer in no, but OmegaT does have Q&A checks as external scripts that are quite useful.

Also, is there any reason why you can't use XBench in a virtualized Windows environment ?

Hi JC,

Thanks. I don't use OmT anymore. Every time I load a project the CPU ramps up to about 400% and freezes my MBP.

I don't like using virtual machines. It times time to load them, they take up space I need for other things, etc.

Basically, I'm a problem child, I know. :D

I appreciate you getting back to me so quickly.

All the best,

Will

Dear William,

Which extra QA checks do you need?

Cheers,

Ionannis

Ave, Ionannis!

I'd like the ability to set up my own rules like you can in Xbench as I
have some customer-specific stuff I'd like to be able to check.

But as in so many things, mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!

I didn't know that this is possible. Please don't apologise. Could you give some examples of those checks.

Of course I could completely dive into this stuff and read the X-bench documentation, but currently I'm trying to enjoy a post-holliday relaxation.

One immediate use that comes to mind is that I have a customer that has
assigned specific English translations to certain German-language job
titles.

These are different in many instances from what one would normally use
in English and so having a rule that flags up each time one of these
German titles appears in a text with a note to me, the translator, to
make sure I've used the right translation would be of enormous value.

This can be done with XBench, but I have not idea if or how this would
be done with CheckMate (and I've just noticed that I can't open CM any
longer - presumably because of a Java conflict which I have neither the
time nor desire to investigate).

Any ideas, O Esteemed Colleague?

I've probably asked that before, but have you tried running Java on a guest account ?

Hi JC,

I can't remember, to be honest.

I'll try to have a go at some point. I'm just buried in work at the moment and know that if I ever start looking at this I'll just keep going until I either want to throw my computer out the window or just give up in disgust - and have lost time I should have spent working. :D

Thanks,

Will

In CafeTran you can use http://cafetran.wikidot.com/qa-word-lists or just a QA for terms (where you can add the notes in the glossary!)

Ah, I reckon the word list option will be the way forward.

Thanks, Hans!

What's wrong with a client-specific termbase, "term consistency"
checked? AA, or not?

What's wrong with QA word lists? Absent/Present is one list only (per
category), as far as I know. So if you really want to go that way,
such a list is for that client only.

I've no idea how to use the term consistency check feature. Will have to look into that.

Thanks for the tip about the words file (per customer).

Nothing much to look into. Just enable it, and use QA in the Menu.

Can you do that with existing memories that didn't have that option set
at the time of creation?

Outstanding.

One last question - not related to this, though:

If you have a memory set as read-only and then accidentally run remove
duplicate segments on it (and it reports something like 250 segments
removed/cleaned up), has it actually removed the segments or has it just
tried to, but can't because it's a read-only memory?

Thanks,

It shouldn't have removed them. To avoid situations like this, I set the TMs I want Read-Only to "Locked" in the file Info. Just to be sure.

I'm reviving this thread to check what QA tool there is now on macOS.

I'm especially thinking of terminology checks against a (tokenized) glossary.

I know OmegaT does that to a certain extent, but there are lots of false positives and I was wondering whether other solutions existed now.
