[sorry for cross-posting]

  • My first problem is that I can't paste anything in some parts of some apps anymore. I first noticed this, when I wanted to paste something in the Subject or "To" line of Mail, but I also can't paste in the TextEdit search box. No problems pasting into the main pane with the same apps. It's not the end of the world, just an annoyance that grows bigger the more you think of it.
  • I can't save an Automator Action as a Service anymore. If I try, the action will save as a Workflow, but it is saved to ~ User | Library | Services, exactly where you would expect a service to be saved in. Not as a Workflow, though.

Any suggestions? I'm still using Lion, but will upgrade to ML at the end of the month (data caps...).

Cheers,

Hans

No idea where that comes from, but I would try to use Onyx or an equivalent application to clean up your system, then reboot and see what's happening.

I just checked in my ML ~/Library/Services folder and the only service that was a .service is the package provided by Devon, WordService. All the services that I created since 2009 (Snow Leopard) are saved as .workflows.

I'm afraid I already did. Repair permissions, Onyx. To no avail.

Which is a .service here (Lion). All services (minus Paste Text into Word) are - unsurprisingly - .services, apart from the two I tried to create a couple of days ago. They were saved as .workflow, and they don't run (even though they are in the context menu). And it's not like I never created a service. This is a "new" problem.

It's a mystery to me. Couldn't find anything on the subject on the various forums, and I spend hours trying to find them. I mentioned services on ProZ, and then one Mac user asked me for help, because he couldn't create the service I was referring to. So I started writing the explanation, making screenshots in the process, and ended up not being able to run it myself. So I created another one by copying a service I created in the past, saved it under another name, and it also saved as a .workflow, and I couldn't run it either. Strange. I then used Time Machine to replace the Automator by one of August last year (same version), again to no avail.

I just tried some of my "workflow" services and they work here. So first of all, let me suggest you to log out and try to do the same thing from the Guest account, or from a totally new account. See if your problems can be reproduced.

If yes, you have a system level problem, if not, you have a user level problem.

I just did. Same err, thing.

A system problem it is then. If fact, that's what the other guy found as an advice from the Apple Help: reinstall OS X. He didn't want to do that, and neither do I. I'll wait till the end of the month, and install ML.

Thanks for the advice.
