On a different subject, yesterday I was at the "オープンセミナー
2008@四国" a yearly gathering for local computer geeks. I presented
OmegaT there last year and this time, I was part of the ライトニン
グトークers about "Japanese language and interaction with the
computer", in 5mn... :) Anyway, one of the other talk was about AWK,
the talker being a developer of xgawk. I went to Kinokuniya and found
the "プログラミング言語AWK" and later discussed with the
speaker. He told be that the translation of the book from English had
introduced a number of terms in CS Japanese, including a major
mistranslation that has remained to this day: "associative arrays" =
"連想配列".
xgawk is supposed to be able to parse XML files (like TMX) but I was
advised by the speaker to use Perl and its extensive CPAN libraries
instead...
There are a number of "historical" translations of computer books. One
is the first translation of "The Art of Computer Programming" by Prof.
Knuth. This one is said to have introduced a Japanese term for
"program", but the term has disappeared and is not replaced by プログ
ラム in most CS books, which is only a transliteration of the English
in a Japanese syllabary. Too bad.
