Does anyone here know if MemoQ performs reliably and efficiently in Crossover Office on a Mac?

I'd like to avoid installing and maintaining a Windows installation to use Parallels.

Thanks,

Will

memoQ is a Windows application, so you will need a Windows virtual
machine (be it Parallels, Fusion or VirtualBox) in order to use it.
The latest version (6.0) no longer requires MS Office to be installed.

Dominique

Well, no.

 Or yes:

BTW, I tried VirtualBox with XP. It's a hundred times more difficult to get everything running than Parallels, but it's FAST. Unbelievably FAST. I think I'll keep it.

Hans

Dominique,

with Codeweavers, you can run some Windows applications without installing Windows.

I tried it a few years ago, as I wanted to run DV, but it didn't work. At the time, it was more geared to games. Apparently this new version deals with other formats as well. I don't know if they sorted out use with applications that need blasted dotnet, that was the main problem.

One more to check. One day, I hope, I won't need Windows anymore.

Of course, the info ('Known Not To Work') is more than two years old, but I would be very surprised if things had changed since.

I tried VirtualBox with Windows 8 on my MBA: it kind of worked, but I couldn't set it to use the full 1440x900 resolution of my MBA. I then switched to VMware Fusion and using the full resolution was no problem.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback. I didn't see the compatibility listings on the Codeweavers site, so much appreciated, Hans.

I'm running MemoQ 6 as a demo on VirtualBox with XP at the moment, but was hoping for a more fully-integrated solution. It's a bit of a pain to use in this manner (machine runs hot, moving between environments a bit fiddly), but it seems to perform well.

Now, I just need to convince the one and only company I work with that requires MemoQ to let me have the licence key they have set aside for me so I can register the product rather than working over the internet on their server.

All the best,

Will

Chances are you have been using a "mobile" license. The idea behind
mobile licenses is that they (the translation company) can lend them
to freelancers for the time of a project. Unless you are working all
the time for them, they probably don't want to give you permanent
access to that license (obtaining a license key from them would be
getting a license for free). You can buy a memoQ license for a little
bit more than 300 euros, with the right timing (the list price of a
memoQ translator pro license is 620 euros).

Cheers,

Dominique

Thanks, Dominique.

Thanks for confirming that. I was wondering if that was what was meant by "mobile license" when I set up the installation. It gave me the option of entering a mobile license supplied by an agency, but I'm only demoing at the moment.

To be honest, MemoQ is cool and all that, but I have an extremely efficient workflow set up for my OmegaT installation and don't really care to work with anything else. And at the price, I just can't justify paying that kind of money when only one of my customers wants me to use the software.

All the best,

Will

I don't, why do you?

I installed VirtualBox only to be able to access legacy software on my Mac rather than on a Windows machine. About once a month. Not important. That's why I'm happy with VirtualBox. It starts up and runs WinXP in no-time.

I work with Parallels, Win7 and DVX and Trados for about two years now and it works very well. I don't know about VMS or Virtual Box. I can't find any drawbacks working with Parallels.

Thanks, Harry.

Do you find you have to keep updating your Windows installation with Parallels or does it pretty much take care of itself?

Best,

Will

Apart from Parallels being relatively slow (compared to VirtualBox), the main drawback is that it costs money. Money for Parallels, money for Windows. And that you work in Windows. Again.

I didn't do much updating on Windows since I have it on the mac. I had to update Parallels when switching to Lion. I never did do much updating on Windows, because in the past I experienced lot of problems when updating Windows. That was one of the reasons for switching to a mac. I only use Windows for DVX and Trados. All other work is done with OSX. Access to internet never goes via Windows here.
