For those magnificent cyclists who pre-registered for the Tidewater races, a refund request has been initiated through BikeReg. They need to pull funds to cover the refunds, so it may take up to 5 business days for the funds to hit your account.
For the record, we had to cancel this year's road race because James City County police officers were unable to provide the traffic control we rely on, particularly at the two corners on Croaker Road. Assignments for these races are voluntary. The police department recently transitioned to 12-hour shifts, with every other weekend off. Given that these officers had just worked a 60-hour week and were being asked to give up half of one of their few free weekends, we didn't get many takers. Going forward, the County is OK with us using VDOT-certified flaggers and USAC motors for traffic control, and while I'd prefer red-and-blue lights on those corners, I think this will provide a safe course for all involved.
My apologies for the short notice on cancellation. We tried our best to keep it on, but it wasn't meant to be. You can prevent future cancellations by registering early for the races you plan to do. It never hurts to let the promoter know they'll reach break-even. Some of these races can be quite pricey, especially those that end in "Road Race".
