Enjoy the attached 1948 start line photo for the first Maryland Road Classic promoted by Clyde Nitz / Chesapeake Wheelmen.
The Wheelmen promoted this race off and on for 25 years at different locations.
The photo gives you a good idea the race kits and bikes used during that period.
Everyone on a fix gear with no brakes. Helmets were not mandatory.
Clyde Nitz is the second rider from the left.
The tall rider with helmet is George Sandruck. He was for 25+ years the area rep for the Amateur Bicycle League of America (the federation ) and founding member of the Chesapeake Wheelmen.
I'm thinking this photo might be on what became I-97 going towards Annapolis. Maybe near Millersville?
Many more photo's of MABRA land racing will be on display at the Wheelmen club dinner Feb 21 st
$30.00 cash at the door but we do need your confirmation.
