I have developed a cyst due to a saddle sore that is not healing properly.
I won't get into details but my question is:

Has anyone ever had to have saddle sore/cyst removal surgery?
How long can I expect to be off the bike after surgery?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

I had one cut out 2 years ago. Ouch. Heck it was about the size of a
thumb nail and I figured it could be taken out in the doctors office.
(My vet would have cut something like this out no sweat.)
Nope, that's a very vascular area, and I ended up having it done, in the
hospital, with anesthesia, to take out a lump that was really not that
big, just annoying.
They used the dissolvable sutures, you know the kind that don't
dissolve, and it abscessed. Then it wouldn't close, and I was off the
bike 6 weeks.

So if you are friends with your vet, get them to do it. You'll have
better results than I did! It'll cost a bunch less as well!

Good luck to you!

Self surgery (this email) is not for the squeamish.

disclaimer: I am not a doctor, nor recommending medical advice; I am
simply telling you my story. You should always consult a doctor for
things like this and not just listen to idiots like me.

I used to get saddle sores quite a bit. Worst case for me, I had one
that was sticking around for about 2 weeks. I put neosporin on it
rigorously day and night, stopped riding for a week, but finally, I
actually staffed it with a needle (dipped in antiseptic first), squeezed
the puss out (that was easily more painful than the staffing), and then
cleansed the area well, and used neosporin (or any triple antibiotic
cream) rigorously for the following days. That did the trick. I
believe the medical term for what I was dealing with was a faruncle:

"a furuncle is usually painful, and may initially look, and feel, like a
pimple. And, if not allowed to heal, a furuncle can become quite large
and exquisitely painful."

You may have something else, but when you say "cyst" that makes me think
"boil". Apparently there are four categories of saddle sores. Read this:

http://www.liquicell.com/assets/pdf/Saddle%20Sores%20(P.%20Kortebein).pdf

According the NIH, these types of cysts must drain before they will
heal. Staffing and squeezing is just my way of speeding up that
drainage process.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001474.htm

Apparently, topical antibiotics after the fact won't help once the boil
has formed. "Antibacterial soaps and topical antibiotics are of little
benefit once a furuncle has formed". So, when I go for long rides now,
I actually do a little preventative medicine and put a little triple
antibiotic cream on the areas that tend to get the sores, since I seem
to be prone to them. Thist has helped 100% in the prevention of sores
for me. Using creams helps prevent the chafing, but using an antibiotic
cream almost guarantees that you won't get a sore.

David Zabriski has great advice on the subject. Search 'David Zabriski
Taint'. Hopefully that will bring up his article on the subject.

'bible bump' or 'ganglian cyst' searches will give you some insight as
well.

David's advice worked for me.

To break it down:
After ride Clean everything...... shorts (Washing machine) not just a
rinse in the sink.
and crotch (Dial soap).
Then dry it I used a acne cream benzoil peroxide 10% ( not on the
banned drug list) and powder (ahhhhhh) (Corn starch or talc), switch
to boxers.
Pre ride Chamois cream.....Assos
Shave the area of contact and keep it clean and dry.

Yes its a bit embarassing to talk about but I know your pain.
It should show noticable improvement in week. Just develop a routine
Lube, Clean and Dry!
Good Luck

If it really is a cyst that's probably a different treatment.

A dear friend and teammate of mine had the tendency to wear his shorts twice
before he would wash them. This was a big mistake. He ended up with a
large crop of saddle sore. Never, ever wear dirty shorts

In the FWIW category, I've had a lot of luck swabbing the infected area with
rubbing alcohol a few times a day. If you haven't tried that approach it
may be worth a shot. If it's going to work you ought to see/feel some
noticeable improvement in a day or two.

Tony...

I used Dave's approach (Goodrum) as well and it worked but I was
really nervous doing sugery so near future thewrob jr. After my mini-
surgery, i was on the bike in a day or so. I would suspect that you
can put some moleskin on your butt if it really hurts...and if that
doesn't work, our team is selling the "harden the eff up" bracelets.

On the preventive side of things.. I used to battle saddle sores
constantly until i put a shim in my shoe. Turns out, i had a leg
imbalence and I was putting a slight amount more weight on my right
side than my left. I'm not suggesting that that is how you developed
yours, but it's an easy fix and maybe worth looking into. I have not
gotten one since I put that shim in.

Also, saddle sores often have the same symptoms as hemroids (encased
blood vessels) so sometimes you can put hemoroid medication on them
and it will work. You can also use it to alleviate baggy eyes/crows
feet. All the supermodels do it...mmmmm supermodels...

loathe as i am to contribute to such a not-safe-for-lunch topic, i'd
suggest possibly swiveling your saddle as well. not much, just a mil
or two. worked wonders for me.
