ATTN All Team,

A race video was shared with us that shows an extremely unsafe maneuver by a MABRA rider during yesterday's finishing sprint of Trade Zone 4 - A race. As as result multiple riders were injured - 1 still in hospital, with multiple rib fractures, punctured lung, broken shoulder, contusions and another rider suffered a concussion. The equipment damage alone exceeds 9K$.

We are issuing a WARNING to all Category A (1, 2, 3) and class A clubs to work with your athletes in safe sprinting/riding drills. Such drastic deviation from sprinting line/maneuver mid pack resulting in a crash is not acceptable in MABRA Racing.

We strive to make the sport safe at all levels, and athletes in senior categories / clubs should lead by example.

V/r, MABRA President

So tell us ?
Was this crash the work of a Cat 1 or 2 rider making this "extremely unsafe maneuver" ?
Surely action should be taken against the rider who caused all the mayhem ?

Dude it’s bike racing.

This crash sucks but posturing up to ostracize someone  isn’t going to make anything better. This happens in bike racing. However, insurance is amazing!

I don’t see any foul here. It’s a wheel overlap. I hope everyone heals up strong! Positive vibes to their fams that have to take care of them!

Anyone needs wheels I’m a Boyd dealer, don’t hesitate to reach out.

But yeah, super disappointed with Sunny’s toxic reaction to this unfortunate situation. I don’t see how this is constructive. What’s up with that? Please explain.

I thought Sunny's reaction was perfectly appropriate. And I also agree that dangerous behavior in group riding should lead to some sort of sanction.

That’s why the video has been taken down… crit racing is fun but it definitely isn’t cute 100% all the time. Maybe ya’ll should switch to gravel..

To Chris, et al...

As a former racer, MABRA cyclocross coordinator, father (who sat in the hospital for hours with my son who now has a broken collar bone), cycling fan and advocate for a safe sport, here's your explanation:

It's constructive to point out the gross error of this rider and make an issue about this situation so it doesn't happen again. Accidents happen, we know this, but in the spirit of safe racing, and to Sunny's point directly ("drastic deviation from a sprint line") especially in the 1,2,3 event, is utterly unacceptable! You don't look at a video like that and shrug your shoulders with a "that's bike racing" attitude. Pay it forward and talk this out for the benefit of all riders.

Teams (and teammates) should absolutely teach smart technique. Change the mindset and moves like this (sprinting from the back of the pack) get second thoughts and perhaps less accidents occur. This lesson should be taught & practiced on all levels (all clubs) to prevent any thought of attempting the reckless move we witnessed yesterday. To repeat Sunny's words: It's imperative that class A clubs and cat 1,2,3 riders display good sportsmanship to set examples, all riders look to them for inspiration/motivation and sportsmanship.

I hope for a speedy recovery for all riders involved.

The video was taken down for a different reason Chris.

I agree simply signing a waiver does not mean that unsafe behavior should not be called out. Regardless of gravel or road.

Here are the rules around intermediate and final sprints. (See attached).

I appreciate your support on the topic Chip and Cecelia.

Sunny,
I totally agree with you that this was a dangerous move that should not be repeated. I wish that the video had been left up on IG, in that it's a teachable moment of what not to do. For those that did not see it, the rider makes a drastic deviation going from the inside line all the way to the outside in just a few meters. To make matters worse, he is sprinting for a minor place. I don't actually understand why people would want the video removed... even if an accident had not happened, it was a very ill advised move. You were right to call it out. Pretty much all of us have done something dangerous in a race, especially as we approach the finish. So it's important that we are all reminded that in the end, it's just an amateur bike race. No result is worth the damage that can be caused by a high speed crash. And even if all of the material damage is handled by insurance, these riders will be living with a lot of pain for a while. I hope everyone is able to heal up soon, and that all of the teams will take this seriously. And thank you Sunny and the rest of the MABRA board for speaking up.

Where is the video?
Let people see it and make their own decision.

The racing and group riding has been off since the pandemic. Maybe it's me, but I just feel like the amount of people doing risking things for little reward has never been higher and the amount of people willing to call out bad behavior has never been lower.

I was about where the rider who's sprint resulted in the crash was when we made the last turn onto the finishing straight. It was pretty obvious that there was no way I was going to make it into even the top 10 places from that position, which in a circuit race (especially a training race) counts for nothing.

Yeah what is Rabadi talking about. I thought I was looking at teammate wheel overlap but it’s totally there in slow mo.
Definitely agree with Sunny.

I would concur with Andrew. I took a hiatus from playing bikes in 2015 and returned after the pandemic. The squirreliness, reckless line changes and general lack of maturity and decorum these days have brought me back memories of my junior years in the 90s. It is inherently a dangerous sport  but there are things we can do to lessen that danger like not diving across three lines for an 18th place in a field sprint. Sonny is right in bringing this up on this public forum as only we as a community can make MABRA safer. Thank you for doing so.  I may be in the minority here  but I also think USAC has made it too easy to upgrade in recent years, a big motor does not equate to knowing how to ride your bike. I am an old grumpy master and witnessing that crash from the smoking section of the peloton was scary and maddening.

I hope everyone is on the mend, can zwift soon and be back out in the sun in 5 to 6 weeks if your docs and loved ones allow.

Might I add, don't buy Boyd wheels locally. That was a tasteless plug.

This area is tasteless for bike racing. Great for trolling.

Agree w/Sunny 100% here ...evidently a foul indeed...a truly idiotic deviation from curb to yellow line mid-pack w/300 meters to go.
Chip, bummed for Nate....bike racing is hard enough without this nonsense. Hope he heals well.
Best
Karl
