AsI finish my Normal game and get ready for Hard, I figured I'd start a thread up about the best way to kill the various beasties in the world of Prototype. Please feel free to add/comment on anything you see here.
Description: Soldiers are you're basic infantry men in Prototype. Although they start out as a challenge, you'll quickly learn that these guys are, basically, your food. Later in the game, with power-ups such as Whipfist, a group of soldiers basically turns in to a health pack that shoots at you. Fun!
Strategies: Soldiers, although frequently varying in appearance, are pretty vanilla in terms of abilities. Soldiers can do two things; but they do them really well! They stand in one place and shoot at you, or run to another place (then shoots you from there!). Their "abilities" come in terms of what weapons they are using. They can come equiped with different machine guns, Grenade launchers, or Rockets. The grenades/rockets can cause some trouble (simply because they knock you out of the air if hit), but besides that, they're nothing to be concerned about. No cover systems. Nothing fancy. Food.
Description: These units are civilians that have become infected with whatever pathogen is raging across the game. They come in a few different flavors, but all have the same strategy to kill them. They are visually different in both movement and style from normal pedestrians. Look for "zombie like" movement (shambling, stumbling, etc) to pick these guys out from the normal ones when going for your "Less than ten civilian consumes" achievement. They follow the same basic principle as Soldiers; they're there for flair, not for a challenge.
Strategies: Most weapons will One-Hit-Kill the civilian infected. Later in the game, they begin to "evolve" slightly to slightly meatier versions of themselves. When this happens, they will start charging you with a bit more confidence than the shambling versions were before; expect 2-6 of them to run in at you at a time and begin meleeing you. A quick hit from your Hammerfist, or really any AOE at all, will destroy these guys in a heartbeat. The Whipfist-feed method also works really well on these guys (for fights like Mother).
Description:Tanks are your basic armor system in Prototype. There isn't much variety here; mainly only Regular or Thermobaric. The Thermo's pack a HUGE punch, so avoid them as much as possible. Tanks are slow, easily hijacked when solo, and a huge advantage when used correctly. They're also relatively easy to destroy when the right powers are evolved.
Strategies: Tanks offer a wide variety of options when it comes to how you're going to deal with them. First, a Tank is easily destroyed by another Tank. Utilizing LT and a main cannon can easily end one in just a few shots. Helicopters at range are also excellent tools to kill tanks; just be sure to be far enough back to avoid their projectiles.
As for powers, you have a wide variety of options to get if you prefer Melee. The Hammerfist Shoulderslam ability, as well as the Blades Downward Slice will both end tanks quickly. Even the Whipfist can deal decent damage if no other means are necessary. However, these options are usually not the best, because...
The quickest way to kill a tank is to go for it's brain! That's right; the pilot. The fastest way to dispatch a group of tanks is to break off, assume a military disguise, and go crazy. You won't even have to rapidly tap Y when disguised; you just jump right in. As long as you immediately exit the tank, you'll keep the disguise as well. Very fun.
When dealing with one or two tanks, just jump in one and flatten the other. You'll usually have it down before it gets any shots in on you; and in the case that it does, it's just armor damage. No damage to you.
Description: Helicopters are the militarys main for of Air transport in the world of Prototype. They come equipped with a machine gun and rocket variant. If you're out of disguise, expect rockets to be flung at you constantly from these guys. Luckily, they are dispatched easily, and offer you many more options on the battlefield in how to deal with dangerous situations.
Strategies: Helicopters come in two flavors; Attack and Transport. Both have weapondry, with the Attack chopper being more agile and featuring a more robust loadout. Something incredibly important to mention is the chain gun on the Attack chopper does not require direct sight of it's target. The Transports, however, requires the nose of the craft to be manually moved over the reticule.
Dealing with these can be done in many different ways. A military Soldiers rocket launcher will down them in a shot or two, and there is an achievement for killing 50 of them in a tank. Likewise, if you can get the drop on them, another helicopter can easily take out another (favor missles over the cannon for great success!). The Whipfist offers you an excellent way to board/take over these during a heavy fight (if you don't have the Whipfist yet, utilize charged jump and dash to get near it, then hit B to board).
Description: You're first truly evolved infected enemy, the hunter is a quick moving, hard hitting enemy that will surely give you some trouble the first time around. These enemies, like most, are best dealt with inside of a vehicle if possible.
Strategies: Hunter are exceptionally agile, and very little can stop them. When you first encounter them, you have very little powers against them. The key to these fights is to always avoid; stay moving, stay agile. Take the time in the air to utilize any weaponry you see lying around. The first time you meet these guys will be in a Military Warehouse; take advantage of this!
Description: A large, snakelike infected that can travel underground. These enemies frequently attack in packs and can pack a HUGE punch. Do not get in melee range of these enemies inside of a vehicle. Their melee attacks (a slam downward) can take almost all the life from the toughest tanks.
If you are in a tank, strafe either to/away or left/right and stay at a range where you can avoid the cars. In a copter, same rules apply; stay mobile, stay alive. They have an invulnerability period as they are emerging and re-entering their underground state. Wait until they pop up on LT targeting before your attack, or you won't do any damage.
Description: A much bigger version of the Hunter; these guys look like what would happen if you slammed two of them together. Two mouths, two spines, and a whole lota' pain. You'll encounter these guys later in the game, and thankfully, not too many times.
Strategies: These fights can be fought similarly to the Hunter fights. By this time you should also have Whipfist; utilizing the "Charge Y" ability in the air can really help for fights involving LH's. If you encounter these during a Hive destruction, a Tank is your best bet for getting them down quickly. As with Hunters, be careful flying low in Choppers around them; sometimes they can jump up and take you down. In a tank, be sure to be constantly moving backwards, as they pause for a second after they melee, and if moving backwards you can usually get in enough distance to point blank a tank shell to their face.
Description: These significantly larger soldier type enemies have some wicked moves to use against Alex. Implanted and trained specifically to fight outbreaks like Alex, they pack a few tricks that other enemies don't have. These enemies appear later in the game, and are not only extremely dangerous, but can drop your disguise and move like a Hunter.
Strategies: Luckily, with a bit of strategy these guys are no problem. These soldiers are unique in the fact that they move like Hunters; big jumps, and very fast. The primary method of defeating these guys is counters; by utilizing the Grab and button reacting, you can take them down incredibly quickly. For fighting them, they're two important things to note:
- In the process of meleeing them, you will most likely be grabbed. STOP PUSHING BUTTONS the second you see the grab animation start; if you can time the forthcoming button press correctly, not only will you get out of the move they're doing to you, but deal heavy damage as well
Also, very important to note, these enemies carry a detection range on them! If you are disguised, STAY AWAY! You can easily identify these enemies with the rings that the generate around them on the radar. Watch your Disguise meter carefully when around them!
One more side note: If you're like me, and went for the Patsy achievement nearer to the end of the game (after D-types have been introduced), be VERY CAREFUL when patsying enemies around them. They will immediately jump to a patsy'd soldier (which you, of course, will be standing right next to). This means that if you patsy anyone, be ready to move; a detection circle is most likely going to jump right on top of you.
Strategies: Whipfist! Stay away from this guy, and charge your Y attack for great success. Unfortunately, this fight ended so quickly for me that I don't remember the majority of what happened. Keep your Whipfist charged, Jump-Dash evade and you'll be good to go!
Description: Elizabeth Green, or "Mother", is a giant cacophony of biological disgustingness. You can barely make out her form in the... "middle" of the worm-thing. Mother, as she's called, has a variety of attacks that will drive you mad. Be ready to break off this fight a few times for some feeding.
Strategies: Mother is actually a very easy fight if played correctly. First, assume the form of a military elite (commander unit). This will allow you to easily take over tanks without any type of resistance. In front of Mother will be a constant stream of spawning Tanks. Take full advantage of this!
The actual fight consists of at least 4 stages, possibly more, with each stage beginning with her base fully reinforced. In this stage, you cannot deal any damage directly to her. Instead, you must destroy the three "muscles" that are holding her up. The damage to these are located directly under her health bar in the form of unique hashmarks (three sections).
