:Dear brothers and sisters the Coptic youth

The holy synod released the names of the nominees for the Patriarchate. Perhaps the most controversial point in this list is the presence of the names of diocesan bishops and metropolitans among the nominees. We would like to investigate this matter from the point of view of the Church canons, then from the point of view of our Church history, then we should ask

ourselves: Do we (as Coptic youth) have any role to play in this controversy

Apostolic Canon XIV (14)

A bishop shall not abandon his own parish and go outside of it to interlope to another one, even though urged by a number of

persons to go there, unless there be a good reason for doing so, on the ground that he can be of greater help to the inhabitants there, by reason of his piety. And even then he must not do so of his own accord, but in obedience of the judgment of many Bishops and at their urgent request.

This canon allows a bishop to leave his diocese to another only in exceptional circumstances and not of his own initiative but

out of obedience of the judgment of many Bishops and at their urgent request.

Canon XV of the Council of Nicaea (325 AD)

On account of the great disturbance and discords that occur, it is decreed that the custom prevailing in certain places contrary to the Canon, must wholly be done away; so that neither bishop, presbyter, nor deacon shall pass from city to city. And if any one, after this decree of the holy and great Synod, shall attempt any such thing, or continue in any such course, his proceedings shall be utterly void, and he shall be restored to the Church for which he was ordained bishop or presbyter.

This canon was enacted because of the many abuses that happened with the previous one, with bishops ignoring the exceptional circumstances needed and the conditions necessary for it. The Fathers of Nicaea decided to put a complete ban on these activities. Their reason for this was to prevent the great disturbance and discords that occur with such moves. Saint Athanasius, however gave us another more important spiritual reason for this prohibition: The diocese was the bishopï؟½s bride, and that to desert it and take another was an act of unjustifiable divorce, and subsequent adultery!

Therefore, if a diocesan bishop or metropolitan leaves his diocese to become Patriarch of Alexandria, he is breaking this canon. We have an important historical precedent for this: When St. Gregory the Theologian left his diocese to become Patriarch of Constantinople, the second ecumenical council annulled this, and he was forced to abdicate from the Patriarchate and stay in a monastery. My brothers and sisters the Coptic youth in Egypt and abroad

We continue to examine the matter of the promotion of diocesan bishops and metropolitans to the Patriarchate from the point of view of Church canons.

Pope Michael I, 46^th Patriarch of Alexandria (744-768 AD.)

During the Patriarchate of this saintly Pope, the Muslim ruler took Isaac bishop of Harran ( Syria ) and made him Patriarch of Antioch and gave orders that whoever resists him should be slain with the sword. Afterwards indeed the prince slew two great metropolitans of this country, because they said to Abba Isaac : ï؟½Thou art bishop of Harran . How canst thou break the canons, and accept the support of the government, in taking the patriarchal throne by violence. Thou forcest us to excommunicate thee.ï؟½ The ruler then asked Pope Michael, Patriarch of Alexandria to send a letter supporting Isaac the Patriarch. Pope Michael gave this answer: Sword or fire or casting to lions or exile or captivity, ---- these are things that trouble me not; but I will not enter into what is not lawful, nor incur my own excommunication, which I subscribed with my own hand and initiated, to the effect that no bishop shall become patriarch..... How can I declare lawful to day what I anathematized yesterday, and to approve to-day what I condemned yesterday, and the holy fathers condemned before me?

Canon of the Holy synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church (1873 AD)

After the repose of Pope Demetrius 111^th Patriarch of Alexandria , Abba Marcus, metropolitan of El Beheira became acting Pope. With the assistance of some supporters, we wanted to seize the Patriarchate, against the Church canons. The Holy synod convened and decreed the following:

We do not accept, nor do we permit the priests or the people of the See of St. Mark to dissolve or transgress these fatherly limits. Everyone who requests this rank, from the ordained bishops or metropolitans ï؟½of the Sees,ï؟½ tried to seek it, has accepted it, or if any one helped him to obtain it, priest, an archpriest, or a lay person, let him be excommunicated.

We notice that the Holy Synod is addressing the priests and the laity holding them responsible for observing this canon, which excommunicates not only those who illegally seek or even accept this transgression but even anyone among the clergy or the laity that assists them in their transgression.
