M24 Owners –

With KWRW under way and the 2011 season upon us, I wanted to take the opportunity to ask you all to please register for the Winter/Spring events that you are planning to attend.  There are already 10 registered for the February Miami event, 16 for the Bacardi Cup, and 26 for Charleston Race Week.  And we have some big name boats!  Note that St Pete is not part of the North American nor the Southeast Ranking schedule this year.  Please plan to attend the Bacardi instead.  You will not be disappointed!  Remember that the sooner you register the sooner people that are undecided will commit.

Here are the registration links:

Register for Miami Winter Series: February 10-12

Bacardi Miami Sailing Week: March 10-12

Register for Charleston Race Week:  April 14-7

And see the teams that are already registered:

Miami Winter Series: February 10-12

Bacardi Miami Sailing Week: March 10-12

Charleston Race Week : April 14-17

Best,

Steve

All,
I disagree with Steve.
Who made the decision to dump St Pete? Why? Was St Pete given a chance to respond or to repair?
Miami will cost about $1,000 more for an Atlanta boat to attend over St Pete.
Who determines what regattas count for the SE Rankings? Is it a panel or one person? Was Tony asked for his opinion?
Remember the SE Circuit was Kesslers idea in the first place.

Just for what it is worth...

The SE Series was designed to maximise the participation and support the active fleets, along with trying to build new ones.  I feel that it accomplished both goals.

When I was Gov, I would poll the active fleets with an tentative itinerary... then precede with publishing once it was approved by the majority (you always had one that did not like it... and it was usually the one that traveled the least).

St Pete seemed to always be the kick off spot.  I do understand that there have been problems there in the recent past.  Have these problems been addressed with the powers to be there to try to be rectified?  IMHO, St Pete is too great of a venue to be kicked off the schedule unless the problems cannot be resolved (which considering my dealings with them, I would think unlikely).

For the sake of full disclosure, Miami, like Savannah, is someplace that I really don't care to ever sail at again (for different reasons).  After the debacle at SORC, as Gov, I voiced my concerns to the organisers, only to be met with, "If ya don't like the way we run things, don't show up!"  Which, for years, is what the M24 fleet exactly did.  By memory... the M24's comprised a full 1/3 of the boats there.  Miami is EXPENSIVE, hard to get to, and in my opinion, just not that great of a sailing venue for the M24.  I understand the new push for Miami.  However, if I still had a M24... I would not be traveling there for a regatta.  Not enough bang for the buck... especially in today's economic conditions.

Yes Miami may be considered a "Grand Prix" venue.  Models on the beach, $15 umbrella drinks, etc.  Do you go to a venue to sail... or to babe watch ( some of y'all probably should not answer that one!  :-)  )  However, how many of the M24 tried and true really care about about the "status" of a venue?  I'll take laps at PNS 10:1 over MIA any day of the year!!!

Again, for what its worth…

I look at Bacardi Race Week as my substitute for Key West Race week. If you look at the cost of KWRW versus Miami it is no contest. It is more distance but that time of year it is worth the miles for 3-4 days of great sailing.

I was one of the M24s that participated back during SORC and Doug is right, the management of the event looked at the M24’s as second hand citizens. A lot has changed since then. The year before last I attended Bacardi for the first time since SORC, in a V640, and I think that the mindset of the Bacardi organization is completely changed since then. They are very responsive to the M24s and all OD fleets that have been invited to participate. Besides the wind always blows and the water is warm and yes the girls are pretty. Let’s keep an open mind; I’m sure that we are going to be surprised by the changes. This is no longer a big boat regatta (M24, Stars, M20, V640, and J24).

I’m looking forward to Bacardi Race Week!!!

Gary:

I am glad that you stated that the management team had changed.  That was something that I was unaware of.  That has to be a positive.

Regardless, you can work the mall math anyway that you want, but the cost per day of sailing in MIA vs  EYW are going to be equal.  Just not worth the dollars in my book.

I assume that they are sailing in Biscane vs outside... which is a plus.  However, launching facilities are (well ..were at my last visit) less than adequate and convenient for the boats.

I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from attending... like you said... keep an open mind.  My comments are only to keep the fleet informed.
