I am certain that we will have four or five boats from Davis Island YC and at least a couple from Sarasota.
Â
All-
Â
The USMCA has decided to not support the St Pete this year and instead focus on the Melges Miami Winter Event, which is the same weekend.Â
Â
Last year St Pete was a mess. They cancelled racing on Friday because it was cloudy. We raced with a bunch of slow boats and we did 3 leg races in planning conditions.  St Pete does not showcase the M24 as a grand prix class. I am in discussions with Sailing World on how to improve in the future, but this year we are trying to get the Europeans to stay and do events in South Florida after Key West in preparation for Corpus Christi.
Â
The Miami event will just be M20s and 24s. Many of the top National teams are planning to be there. I know it’s a shorter drive for the Atlanta fleet and its home base for the Tampa/St Pete guys, but please consider doing the Miami event instead. Biscayne Bay is a fantastic venue and its affordable if you plan in advance. Plus – you get to leave your boat rigged at the club and come back a month later for the Bacardi Cup. The Bacardi is a first class operation. Makes the NOOD look like a local Opti regatta.Â
Â
So again, do what you want, but I would ask that you seriously consider doing both Miami events. I have been doing everything possible to make sure we have a big turnout for Worlds. Your commitment to Miami and early registration will help show the Euros and Australians that they should come.
Â
Here is the link for the Miami event. There are already 5 boats registered:
Â
http://www.yachtscoring.com/emenu.cfm?eID=415
Â
I would post the registration for NOODs, but Sailing World (whos business is sailing, mine is not), cant seem bothered to get a registration site open.

Although I don't have a dog in this fight, I would ask you to reconsider
the mass movement towards St Pete Nood Vs. Miami.
The Nood has been on a down swing for many many years and last year was
just plan poor for the M24. We (both Steve, Joy and I) had tried in the
past to work with the St Pete Nood Folks to create a better experience
for our owners and it fell on deaf ears. They are not interested and
right now we are 3 months from the event and people can't even find the
dates.
Take all of that and combine it with a complete crap shoot for weather
and wind and I would think you would want to see if it makes sense.
Steve and his team have worked very hard to try and get a good location
in FL where there is consistent breeze, a good location that wants the
M24, storage and affordable housing. I think they have done it with
Miami. Guys....the class on a National side needs everyone rowing in
the same direction. Numbers and participation is down no one can argue
that, now more than ever there is the need for grass roots support for
what the class people are trying to do. Which is making it easier,
cheaper and fun. I know this is tough for the local group in and around
St Pete, but rather than just dismiss Miami as "too far", think about
all the other things that go along with this. If Miami fails I think it
will be a large negative mark for the class in the US.
If I was in a different place family and work wise right now I would be
all over Miami as the set up, sailing and logistics is far superior to
St Pete Nood. If you can do both then that is great, but I do hope that
there is just more consideration and dialog on the Miami as it is like
KWRW, it's not as expensive as you think, it's all how you plan it.
Travis
I sailed Miami last year and loved the whole experience and highly recommend
it to everyone in the class and I concur with you that if you can only
afford to do one event in February it should be Miami. I hope to do both
only because it appears all the guys still like St Pete where there is
always a great party and lots of sailing friends to reconnect with.
Cheers
Rob
