Lake Lanier Boating takes another hit! read below:
The US Army Corps of Engineers reported today that the little used overflow dam at Lake Lanier has been found to have a major crack which if not repaired could cause a major disaster. Thousands of homes and lives of those living below the dam would be jeopardized if this dangerous situation is not alleviated immediately.
Ralph Stern, a Structural Engineer for the Corps stated "Starting Monday water will be released from the dam in an effort to drop the lake level 24 feet below full pool so the weakened area in the structure can be repaired".
While there is concern that the water supply for Atlanta could be severely impacted it is hoped the repairs could be completed within 3 months, before the start of the dry season.
"Hopefully we will have enough rain this year to make up the loss of the water supply". Stern said.
"As far as boating and recreation, this has not been a concern for the Corps in this situation since there is nothing in the charter regarding use of the lake for recreational activities".
