LLSC M24 Nationals Report

It was a great fall weekend in Wisconsin. Team Hermes, Jaws, and Shaka made the 900 mile drive to compete against 46 strong teams at the beautiful new Buddy Melges Sailing Center at Lake Geneva Yacht Club. Racing was held 100 meters off the docks. Other SE district friends on the course included George Haynie and Gary Schwarting.
The first two days were a very Very shifty 10-15 knots from the WNW. Day 1 saw regatta local favorite Full Throttle break their mast in the first race, opening it up for some spectacular competition for the top places. Also on day 1, Jaws had a spin halyard break in the mast, causing them two miss the 2nd and 3rd race of the regatta. After some quick boat work, Jaws was back out for race 4 on the first day. Shaka and Hermes kept their finishes consistent, with no throwouts.
Day 2 was four tough races in 10 knots, with teams going hero to zero in puffs and shift. Shaka remained consistent, finished with an crazy 8, and was able to throw a very questionable scoring penalty. Jaws struggled to find its footing and keep up.
Day 3 opened with a 2 for Shaka and 6 for Jaws. Ultimately, this put Shaka over the line for a hard fought Corinthian podium. This marks the third podium for LLSC Melges teams in 6 years at National Championships. (Massey 2011 Lake Geneva, Jaws 2014 Davis Island, Shaka Lake Geneva 2016). Jaws finished 25th, Hermes 43rd. In the open division, Bora won, Embarr 2nd, Monsoon 3rd.
