hey all:) especially event organisers,
pls post your write-ups for the orientation booklets here to let us
all have a look at the updates of the diff events so far and maybe we
can put forth any feedback too.

to start it off, here's our write-up for Treasure Hunt:):)

THE Quest

“When August creeps on to an end,
Out will Orcs come to seek your land,
Complete the Quest with all thy might,
And treasures will be in thy sight.”
-Merlin -

On the 29th of August, year 1350, there a great battle was fought in
Winchelsea, a small town in the southeast of England, known as the
“Battle of Les Espagnols sur Mer”. English fleet of 50 ships commanded
by King Edward III achieved victory over a Castilian fleet of 40
ships. And so, that is what the history books tell us.

However, the truth is, there was no such battle. What happened on the
29th of August, was the emergence of Orcs on the north of Winchelsea.
It has been said that at the end of every August, Orcs will emerge
from dust to roam the lands, and they carry along the greatest
treasure on earth, which they call the “trésor de vie”. After 2
nights, they will return to dust and will reemerge again from it 12
months later.

The English tried battling the Orcs in the year 1350 to obtain the
fabled treasure but they lost and retreated.

Legend has it that on the 29th of August, 1350, while the English and
the Orcs are battling on the shores of Winchelsea, there were many
groups of treasure hunters who set out to find the “trésor de vie” on
the Hills of Jalil, north of Winchelsea. 1 of the groups successfully
retrieved the “trésor de vie”, and by midnight, the Orcs returned to
dust and was never seen again. From then onwards, all proofs of the
existence of Orcs were eliminated. The events that happened on that
29th August became a secret, and after 600 years, a legend.

This Friday, will be the 29th of August, year 1350. You must set out
to complete the prophesized Quest and obtain the “trésor de vie”.
Around the Hills of Jalil, are various stations, each with a different
task which you have to complete. Upon completion of each task, you
will be given a clue and occasionally, a Quest Relic, all of which
will lead you to the “trésor de vie”.

However, know that there are Orcs lurking all over the Hills of Jalil
and they let no one complete the prophesized Quest to obtain their
treasure.

Now, we bestow upon you, as the treasure hunters for the “trésor de
vie”!

Guidelines for THE Quest

THE Quest has 2 parts to it – For the 1st part, teams will set off in
their Quest to travel around the Hills of Jalil and complete the
assigned task at each station. They will then be led to the 2nd part –
The Trail, where they will embark on a trail and seek to obtain the
“trésor de vie”. Teams must collect all the clues before proceeding to
The Trail.

At the beginning, each team will be given a set of items.
1. Rope of Life
The team can use this rope to form a circle around the entire group
and anyone who is within this ring of defence will be spared from the
Orcs.
2. Gold Coins
If a team member is tagged by an Orc while he/she is not within the
circle of protection, the team must pay up 1 gold coin.
*Note that the gold coins are limited in amount, if the team runs out
of coins, that team member will be captured by the Orc and points will
be deducted from the team. The team will also have to complete a task
instructed by the Orc for the release of their team member.
3. Map of Stations
Teams must go from station to station in the order prescribed in the
map.

The basic strategy is to go from station to station close together as
a team, and when an Orc is sighted, teams must quickly form the ring
of defence around them and walk together. Once the team reaches the
station, they will be guaranteed natural immunity from the Orcs.

As teams progress from station to station, they will obtain more
clues, and also Quest Relics.

Obtainable Quest Relics:
1. Fairy Dust
A small bottle of wizardry sand, which when sprinkled on an Orc, it
will stun him for 5 seconds.

2. Band of Immunity
Each team can appoint any member to wear this band of Immunity, making
him/her invulnerable to any Orcs, and may travel around freely without
the fear of Orcs.

3. Candle D’Espoir
This relic is crucial for the team to complete the Quest. Each team
will have to light up this candle and keep the flame burning
throughout the Trail in order for them to retrieve the “trésor de
vie”. As the name suggests, this relic signifies Hope, which every
team member should have and keep the Hope burning in them as they set
out as a team to complete THE Quest.

The Trail
Finally, upon completion of the stations, teams must return to the
Final Station where they will be led on a trail in search of the
“trésor de vie”. Each team will be required to light up the Candle
D’Espoir (the 3rd Quest relic which they obtained in previous
station), in which they must guard well and keep the flame burning
throughout the trail.

In the event the flame goes out during the trail, the team has to
backtrack to any of the checkpoint stations to relight the Candle
D’Espoir before continuing their pursuit. Beware of the Orcs who will
also be lurking around to try all means to stop teams from reaching
the final destination.

Alas, the Trail and the Candle D’Espoir will lead the team to where
the “trésor de vie” is kept, and it is up to the team to retrieve it.

THE Quest
Date: XXX
Time: 4.45 pm
Venue: Bukit Jalil
Attire: Orientation T-shirt, shoes, appropriate shorts or pants
Additional Equipment: Water, Torchlight

Note:
- All members of a group must stay together at all time.
- No skipping of stations, visit the stations in the order as
assigned.
- Take good care of your map, items and Quest Relics.
- There is absolutely no need to pretend to be Power Rangers and fight
the Orcs. Come up with a strategy as a group and make good use of the
Quest Relics and we assure you, your journey will be safe:)
- Points will be awarded based on the completion of task at each
station, performance of the team, their display of teamwork and
enthusiasm and the retrieval of the “trésor de vie”.
- Points will be deducted for any non compliance.

Cheers:)

The Movie Production & Photography Committee
would like to announce a new task for each group, and please be
informed that this task will carry marks in your quest of becoming the
best group of the M208 orientation.

So what do we want from you? We want photos....and not just any
photo, but those taken during this orientation. But we don’t want just
random photos. Since we will be giving marks and rate your photos this
time, we advise you to strongly adhere to the guidelines. Here are the
details:

1.) 3 sets of photos must be submitted:
a. SET A (Group)
- Group photo, means all members and OOs must be included in each
photo
- 3 photos only

b. SET B (Preparation)
- Photos of members or OOs preparing for the events. Such as group
discussions, dance or dress-code practice, or making props for Finale
Night.
- 5 to 8 photos
- Candid photos will carry bonus points

c. SET C (Track Trip)
- Photos taken during ‘Track Trip’
- 5 to 7 photos
- Refer to details for ‘Track Trip’ for the assignment.
- Must include at least one photo taken during your travel in
LRT, bus or car

2.) Marks allocation.
- 20% for Adherence to guideline. For example, if you submit less or
more photos than what is stated in the guideline, fewer marks will be
given.
- 30% for Creativity. Get creative. Don’t just take from one angle.
Use some props or costumes, or whatever.
- 20% for Quality. Set your exposure, focus and composition right.
It’s OK if you’re not interested in photography, and only submit your
photos full of error. But just bear with less mark then.
- 30% for Special features. The more interesting your photos are, the
more marks you’ll get.

3.) Photo submission
- Before sending in your photos, please scale them down first and then
organize them by creating a folder named “Photo of your-group’s-name”.
Inside this folder, create 3 more folders named, SET A, SET B and SET
C. Copy your photos into the appropriate folders (see guideline number
1). Finally, rename each photo ‘alphabet of photo set’-‘number of
photo’. For example, for the first group photo in SET A, rename it to
‘A-1’.
- Copy those folders into your thumb drive, and ...before XXXX

4.) Additional information
- IMPORTANT! Photos must be scaled down to 1024 x 768 px. We won’t
accept anything more than that scale. Use programs like Microsoft
Office Picture Manager (right click photo, open with...), and edit
(resize or compress) to the required scale.
- You can also edit the contrast, brightness or colour of your photos
to make them even more interesting.

Maybe this year, we're going to choose the best picture for some
categories. So remember, only choose the best ones to submit to us,
thanks!

Great to read about the write-ups!

To all those who'll be doing so, please don't fret about the dates,
timing, venue etc. yet. Technically, SRC and The Dean (Prof Yasmin)
has yet to give the go-ahead for our orientation. Woei Jiun will be
seeing the SRC on the 23rd this month with a few committee members, so
do keep expect calls/messages from him pretty soon! Till then, please
continue to refine your write-ups.

Thanks =)

Signature Hunt
One of the most important documents in history, the Paris Peace Pact
(1928) had gone missing!! This document which was signed by 63
countries including all the great powers except the USSR is vital in
keeping the world at peace. In this treaty, all the countries were
supposed to renounce war as an instrument of national policy and to
exempt wars of ‘self defense’. This loss was believed to be among the
major factors leading to the WORLD WAR II, the MOST DEVASTATING war in
history. Hence, using a time machine, you’re about to change the
history!! You and your group members accidentally travelled through
time and arrived moment right after it was stolen. Hence, it’s up to
you guys to recollect SIGNATURES from all LEADERS of the countries
before public realised its loss. HURRY UP & HUNT ‘EM DOWN….

Meanwhile, here are some rules and regulations you’re ought to
follow..
a) Every group must be accompanied by at least one OO when seeking the
signatures.
b) The LEADERS have the power. You will do what they say as long as it
is within the limit.
c) Dateline: before 5pm on the last day of orientation
d) Forgery is unforgivable and lead to deduction in your mark.
e) Score: - more ‘powerful’ LEADER does not necessarily bring more
marks
- the earlier you send it, the higher your marks
- bonus will be given if you can persuade the LEADERS to take
a group photo with you.

Finally, always remember, ALONE YOU’RE weak, but TOGETHER, YOU’RE
STRONG… Enjoy the Hunt!!

The hand that signed the treaty bred a fever,
And famine grew, and locusts came;
Great is the hand that holds dominion over
Man by a scribbled name.

Dylan Thomas (1914 - 1953)

With all these inside, the orientation theme sounds more like nancy
drew. Erm.. just wanna suggest to Justin, the candles can't last
through the whole trail, and stunning an orc for 5 seconds won't make
much difference, will it? how are the orcs supposed to show themselves?
just chilling on the side walk, or walking around the trail, or hiding
behind the bush? are they allowed to walk in that circle? how about
quest prizes like a fake gold coin to give the orcs, or a longer stun
foor like, maybe 30 seconds?

Mmm, the trail is just the final part of the treasure hunt. And its
just a short journey from point A to point B. Haha, mm, thx for the
point, we will get an appropriate candle, and test the candle timing
for the trail. :D

Hmm, bout the stun thing, the last time i made this game, the stun was
3 seconds. >.< The stun is actually just a method of protecting the
team while they get together to form the circle. 5 seconds shud b enuf
to form the circle.

The orcs will be hiding around and ambushing juniors from behind
bushes. Haha, will be quite "chi kek" one. So every journey from
station to station is dangerous and the juniors must stick together
and form a strategy based on the terrain of the area.

And yeappp, eheh, the juniors can walk but they must always remain in
the protective circle. So we give them the flexibility of forming
their own strategy. Some groups may want to stick together and slowly
walk in the circle, some groups may want to go 1 by 1 sneaking to
their destination without alerting the orcs, some groups may give the
girls the protective circle (less ppl in circle, means more mobility)
while the guys scout ahead for orcs.. etc.

Oh, fake gold coins, haha, tht is to bluff the orcs or bluff the
juniors who use it on the orcs?

Still remember 6 coloured individuals with hand-held devices utilizing
Power Coins, each with a depicting prehistoric creature, upon calling
out “It’s Morphin’ Time!”, morphed by holding their Morphers out and
pressing the activation trigger while pronouncing the name of their
respective creature. “Dragonzord!”, “Mastodon!”, “Pterodactly!”,
“Triceratops!”, “Saber-Toothed Tiger!” and “Tyrannosaurus!”
respectively?

In a fictional town of Angel Grove, California (just picture KL as the
above beautiful town and imagine you are living right there), wise
sage Zordon becomes aware of the release of the evil witch – Rita
Repulsa – he was responsible for catching 10 000 years ago. He orders
his robotic assistant, Alpha 5 to keep a lookout for 5 Medical
Students to defend the Earth from Rita’s attack. Hence, here goes the
task of your group for the most interesting and enjoyable event of
Orientation – TRACK TRIP !

Don't miss this event for it’s the best time you get the chance to
foster strong and sticky bonds with your orientation mates. It is also
the only time you can involve non-IMU students into this part of
orientation after spending so many days with the same faces in IMU.
And with regards to foreigners or foreignised-Malaysians, it’s the
time to familiarize yourselves with KL – the most happening city in
Malaysia (?) – because you know you’ll regret if you don’t turn up for
Track Trip. Ask your seniors.
(:

Task
1) 5 members from the orientation group are to dress up as Power
Rangers from the original Power Rangers; i.e. Red Ranger, Black
Ranger, Blue Ranger, Pink Ranger and Yellow Ranger (complete with
headgears which can vary depending on the teams’ creativity. Cardboard
masks, plastic masks, sidearm blaster, dragon dagger, etc.). Costumes
can be as creative as the group wishes and marks will be rewarded
accordingly.

2) 2 pictures are to be taken, one with the 5 power rangers posing
with a selected best dressed person from the mall. The other photo is
a group photo with the worst dressed person in the mall. Rangers have
to pose as when they are about to morph, chanting “It’s Morphin Time!”
as a group.

3) Each group will also be designated a certain kind of course meal.
Eg. Groups 1 to 5 – desserts, Group 6 to 10 – appetizers etc and each
group must traverse the whole mall in search of the WORST possible
food they can find correlating with their selected course meal.

4) A picture must be taken of the food as well as a picture of all the
members tasting it.

5) A final picture of the cleaned out plate has to be submitted as
well.

Lastly, HAVE ALL THE FUN YOU CAN UNDER THE SUN and save those great
memories for life.

Here's our write up for the ice breakers. Do comment. sy will be the 1

Theme: Ice Age

You’ve just set foot in this university, you haven’t even got to know
a handful of people and now
you have this orientation to deal with. But no worries, that’s what
the ice-breakers are here for.

Thanks to the ‘time machine’
You have been transported to a period
Long before there was fire

You are now in, the Ice Age...

This is where you will have to ‘break the ice’! Literally of course =)
In the first part of ice breakers
we have prepared loads of fun games which hopes to involve everybody.
This is where you first start to build that teamwork and understanding
which will be all the more important in the coming weeks of
orientation and throughout your life at IMU.

As it nears the end of the ice age, huge ice caps are melting and the
world all of a sudden starts
to become flooded with water. So obviously, prepare to get really wet
in this part of the event! Here you will be competing against other
teams for the ultimate prize: Survival. The best team from this clash
will have an advantage going into the treasure hunt. There are also
points up for grabs so give it your all!

Date: ???
Time: 4.30 – 10.30pm (teams required to arrive at least 15 mins
before)
Venue: MPH 6/carpark
Attire: Any t-shirt, slippers (preferably)
Additional Equipment: pails (2), old newspaper, , brooms with plastic
bristles (2) and MOST IMPORTANTLY a positive attitude!

breakers.

<I'm sorry that my first write-up was too lengthy...so here's a new
one, more concise and straight forward.>

A time-travelling journey through the orientation week
is not complete without preserving your memories with some photos.
So what are you waiting for? Get ready to pose for the camera,
because we’ll be rating your shots and give you some marks for them,

- Photos of members or OOs preparing for the events. Such as group

- Refer to details of ‘Track Trip’ for the assignment.
- Must include at least one photo taken during your travel in
LRT, bus or car

d. SET D (Signature Hunt) - up to 5 photos
- Refer to details of ‘Signature Hunt’ for the assignment

2.) Marks allocation.

- 30% for Creativity. Be creative. Don’t be that typical ‘medical-
student’.

- 30% for Special features. Wear costumes or add props, or anything
that would make your photos stand out from the others.

3.) Photo submission
- Before sending in your photos, scale them down! Then organize them
properly - rename and put in separate folders.
- IMPORTANT! Photos must be scaled down to 1024 x 768 px.
- Copy those folders into your thumb drive, and .....<to be decided>
before XXXX

We recommend each group to appoint one person to be in-charge of
photography (a.k.a. the cameraman/woman), but others, please help out
that poor guy/girl! Oh, and maybe we're going to select the best
photos for a few categories. So remember, only choose the best ones to
submit to us. Say cheese!
