Hi Lynda,

My grandfather, Herbert Royston was the son of Mary E Johnson. He was born 16/09/1911 and lived with her at 13 Wood St. Hyde. We know he had a half brother, Walter and a half sister, Emma.

Taking the above, it seems that his father was Walter (Peaker) Royston although we don't know for certain and it seems that Walter and Mary were living apart in the 1911 census. Walter at 33 and Mary at 13 Wood St. Hyde.

Another strange thing is that the mother's maiden name on my grandfather's birth certificate is listed as Hollingsworth which was Mary's married name from her first marriage and not her true maiden name.

Just thought you may be interested and/or may have something to connect my dots.

Regards,

Ian

Hi Ian

Nice to hear from you :)

I did find that second marriage of Walter Peaker/Royston to Mary Elizabeth Johnson and you've confirmed it's right so that's great.

Walter's father George PEAKER died in 1862 when Walter was only two years old.  Walter alternated between using his father's surname of PEAKER and his stepfather Thomas's surname of ROYSTON.  He married as Walter Royston and all his children went by the surname of Royston.  Walter's daughter Minnie (with Mary Taylor) was my son's great-grandmother.

As I put on the website, in the 1911 census Walter was the head of a household and is recorded as married.  Scored through is the information he'd been married for six years with one child born and one child deceased.  This works in with the 1905 marriage to Mary Elizabeth (who wasn't present on census night as you say).  It's looking likely your granddad Herbert was the son of Walter & Mary Elizabeth.  He must've been with his mother on census night.
In the household that night with Walter were his 19 year-old daughter-in-law of less than a year, Ann Jane ROYSTON (wife of Walter jnr) and Walter's unmarried 22 year-old son Albert.

The death of a 73 year-old Mary E ROYSTON is listed in the 1945 BMD Index for Hyde, Cheshire.  I didn't know she'd been married previously to someone Hollingsworth.

Would love to see any documents and/or photos you may have.  Thanks again for getting in touch.

Cheers, Lynda

Herbert wasn't included on the 1911 census as he was born 16/09/1911 which was after the census.

Hi again,

Sorry for the delay!

On the 1911 census Mary was down the road(13 Wood Street) at her Mothers house with her 2 children and most likely pregnant with my grandfather.

See attached files.

Regards,

Ian
