If the firmware stored in its memory needs to be revived or restored, a Mac with Apple silicon or the Apple T2 Security Chip might become unresponsive. This can occur in certain rare circumstances, such as when a power failure interrupts macOS installation. Symptoms can include:
Follow these steps based on whether the affected Mac is a laptop computer or desktop computer, and whether it's a Mac with Apple silicon or a Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip. You will use the USB-C cable to connect the two computers, then enter DFU (device firmware update) mode on the affected Mac.
I bought an AirTag and it came with the original, old firmware version. I tried leaving it literally next to my iPhone overnight and during daytime several times without any success. Today I tried a different approach: I opened the Find My app on my MacBook, selected the AirTag and played its sound to be sure it was connected to the MacBook; I then left the AirTag next to it for a while, then I quit the app and closed the lid. After that I left it next to my phone for a couple of minutes and when I came back it showed the latest firmware version had been installed.
Had 5 AirTags and bought another one 3 weeks ago. The firmware was 1.0.291, latest version is 2.0.36. The intended use of the new AirTag is to be used where it can not normally be in contact with any of my Apple devices connected to my AppleID. Before starting to use it I wanted to have the latest version of the firmware.
Im trying to update firmware on my SSD drive. However, when I hold down the option key it requires a password to select a disk. This does not allow for the .iso imagine, on the DVD, to be seen so I can update my drive. How do I remove this requirment in 10.8.2?
Another method that I used is: assuming you can log into OS X and have sudo abilities then open the terminal and type "sudo nvram -p" where the password will be your login password. It will display the security password string. Then type "sudo nvram -d security-password". Reboot. Should be gone. Then you can reboot and hold down command-R to boot into the recovery console and set a new password or just leave it alone. At any rate, I've had to do this a few times myself as I forget what I set the firmware password to.
Hey, try this, it might help you remove your forgotten firmware password. Try removing 1 stick of ram from your computer, leave the other one alone, then turn on your computer, then write away press and hold the command, option, p, and r keys. After you here the startup chime beep 4 times, you can release the keys, then turn off your computer and put the stick of ram you removed, you should be good to go. Let me know if this helps you.
As already stated, if you don't know the firmware password, you will need to contact Apple. The RAM trick mentioned by boisebimmer does not work on recent hardware. The post marked solved by mtnbk7 should not work, and if it did at some point, that was a serious security flaw that I would hope has been fixed.
Im trying to get Vive base station firmware update to work. Is there any trick here? I've no business on a developer forum, but Apple support sent me to Vive support to get this done and Vive support has sent me here. When I follow Vive firmware update instructions: base station connected to system via usb, Channel switch on back of base station depressed, the insert power cable step results in no action other than a "firmware.bin" file appearing on my desktop in a file who's icon looks like a hard drive. its name "CRP DISABLD".
My AIrpods Pro 2 have been "waiting" for a firmware update for over a month. Still stuck on an early 5A377 version The later versions have a feature not in this version, namely enable/disable of volume slider and most importantly, volume slider sensitivity adjustment. BOTH these features are not in my current 5A377. I have tried at least a dozen force update "fixes" posted here by forum "specialists" as well as multiple YouTube "fixes" as well as fixes found on multiple other sites. I also have AirPods 1 and AirPods Pro originals which have NO PROBLEM updating firmware only these Gen 2 Pros seem stuck. Driving me nuts 'cause I need that missing feature.
I contacted support again and the asked me to take my AirPods to a local Apple repair shop to get them fixed. So, I scheduled an appointment on Wednesday evening. Support did say they were under a limited warranty after I provided them with the serial number. We will see if they can update the firmware.
I bought a used 2014 Mac Mini from an authorized 3rd party dealer. Somehow the system lock was activated and I was asked for a 6 digit pin. Tried anything I would used for such a pin and it then locked me out completely after a few tries. Now it says "Wrong passcode. Try again after 60 minutes." But after 60 minutes I am not given any means to enter a passcode. I tried booting it in disk recovery mode and I get a black screen with a white padlock. Under is a box where I can enter something but nothing works. I took it to the store where I bought it and they said that the firmware lock had to have been set after I bought the machine because they would not have been able to refurbish the machine and install the new OS if that lock was set. I suspect the lock was set by the original owner but they say not possible and sent me to the local Apple certified dealer (not a Apple store) with my proof of purchase. That store said that Apple rejected my proof of purchase and that I needed the original proof of purchase. So before I go back and argue with the store where I bought it, I need to know
One of my co-workers a few years ago was working on an Apple laptop and was surprised to find the laptop suddenly had an EFI firmware password. Previously he had been able to boot from external media. Since the laptop was in for repair it's possible the hardware issue we were investigating managed to flip a bit in the firmware to make the laptop believe it was firmware locked.
Yes, I am using an Apple keyboard. When I have reset the PRAM on any other computer, the computer will chime and then reboot and chime again until I let go of the keys. On this one it only chimes the first time and continues to startup. So either holding those 4 keys isn't doing anything or the firmware password is preventing it from restarting and resetting the PRAM. When you do successfully resent the PRAM, does that also wipe out the wifi info? Because this is not doing that. It stays on the wifi that I set before I tried to reset the PRAM. If the issue is the firmware password, this is what Apple says:
Some Macs no longer will allow more than one activation of the PRAM reset although if your laptop chimes it should normally allow multiple resets. A firmware lock will prevent a PRAM reset. I don't know about any other types of system locks.
My first apple pencil from 2016 is not working. Thats ok (firmware 02.40.00). The pencil is fast popping up on the iPad, but just disappear after few seconds. Then I bought a new apple pencil last week. And the same problem is happening! This firmware is (02.48.00, notthe latest one) I got an iPad pro 12,9 first gen. with ios 13.2.1. I tried booth of the pencil at my local service senter and apple store. It didn't work there either. The tech guy was a little bit embarrassed. So now I am sitting here with two apple pencil 1.generation, because of a bug in the iOS firmware. (I think the problem is the relation between the os firmware and the pencil firmware, because a friend of my use the same pencil but with the 02.61.00 update on the pencil) ...(and yes I have tried all the troubleshooting apple told me) ...
I'm having exactly the same problem with the pencil (firmware 02.48.00) on an ipad 7th gen. While I have the pencil plugged in, the 'pair' option comes up but if i leave it a second then it disappears by itself. If I open the 'about' tab in general settings, then i see the pencil constantly disappearing and reappearing whilst it is plugged in. I have tried all the standard troubleshoooting options (fully charging the pencil, full reset and even factory resetting of ipad, etc)
I have recieved a new in box apple pencil 1st gen for my Ipad Pro 10.5 which was also recieved new in box for Christmas 2019, which is listed as supporting this pencil and have the exact same problem. I have returned my pencil and gotten a replacement and it also fails to pair long enough to use. I have gone through the forums and online and tried hard reset of Ipad, turning bluetooth on and off, making sure pencil is centered in charging port. having pencil fully charged. I was only able to get a partial pairing long enough to see that the battery app showed the pencil while plugged into the Ipad Pro 10.5 was at 100%, when I removed pencil to use the battery app quickly showed the pencil dropped to 1% land unpaired. That only happened once out of the two new pencils I have used. Plugging in most the time shows the pair window very quickly and then it dissappears, pushing pair does not work when you are able to catch it, to push . The about in settings does the same thing showing the pencil flashing in and out and if you are super quick you can push the > symbol and get a screen that flashes up fast and shows the version model and firmware version, which is easier to read if you have a phone camera ready to take a picture of it when is is up for a second. got to be quick. My wife also has a Ipad Pro 10.5 from 2017 and has a pencil 1 so I borrowed hers and it paired up with my Ipad Pro 10.5 no problem just as you would expect, not a problem, I then checked in Settings, General, About and found that her pencil 1 is version 02.61.00 , it had updated in her Ipad Pro while plugged in. I suspect that if one could update their new pencil 1 to the latest firmware it too would work with Ipad OS version 13.3. I called tech support and they suggested all the things I had done and finally suggested I either send in both my Ipad Pro 10.5 and my pencil 1 or take them to a Apple Support Center. Yes, I know what your thinking, why don't you update on your wifes Ipad Pro 10.5 , and I will do this soon , hopefully my new pencil will update the firmware on her Ipad to work on my Ipad. Pretty sure this is a issue of software, Ipad OS 13.3 and pencil firmware not being compatible.
