This book contains typical Korean dialogues on 30 different topics. They are all very common situations that you may experience in your day-to-day life. The conversations have been written in just the right length for an intermediate learner, and each line has an English translation on the adjacent page. You can listen to every vocabulary word, sample sentence, and complete dialogue from the book using the accompanying audio tracks.

Thank you to TTMIK team for writing up such an amazing book. I really enjoy studying with it and knowing how to speak just not in formal way (as in most textbooks) but also informally. Definitely seeing how conversations are made in real-life gave me a better perspective of the language. Also want to thank the TTMIK team for amazing customer service. I had some issues with the book that I ordered and was dealt with in an efficient and heart-warming manner. Will continue to support TTMIK and thank you for being an important part of my Korean learning journey.

what are some good books on probabilities and measure theory?I already know basic probabalities, but I'm interested in sigma-algrebas, filtrations, stopping times etc, with possibly examples of "real life" situations where they would be used

I like Olav Kallenberg's Foundations of Modern Probability - about as complete and up-to-date a textbook as you can find on the subject. It's not easy reading, despite its well written nature, because Kallenberg really packs a LOT into it. But it's certainly worth the effort. I personally wouldn't try and learn measure theory from it,though-it'll definitely be much easier going if you've already had a graduate real analysis course.

I learned probability from Grimmett & Stirzaker, Probability and Random Processes. It has a lot of exercises with a good mix of difficulties. It was a standard fixture on the desks of quants at the bank where I used to work. It's pleasant to read, includes interesting applications, does its best to build intuition and the occasional joke is pretty funny (YMMV).

Caveats: I stopped just short of the material on the It calculus, and if/when I come to study that subject I'll probably seek out a more leisurely treatment. Also, although it does things in terms of sigma-algebras etc the book aims to teach probability, not rigorous measure theory.

Feller's books are the standard reference. Personally I used Measure theory and probability theory by Athreya and Lahiri, which gives basic informations about some of the topics mentioned above, to begin with.

I felt excited to go to school, but secretly, I wondered how I would survive with my rudimentary Japanese pieced together over one year of tutoring. I armed myself with a mustard-yellow pocket dictionary just in case

After about 20 minutes, I suddenly realized we had been speaking Japanese the whole time! I was finally conversationally fluent. It was still awkward and imperfect, but I was actually communicating. And it was fun.

To preface this, I started with an introductory textbook called Genki. I finished both volumes with the help of a Japanese teacher. (And I recommend anyone starting out in Japanese to have a teacher at the very beginning.)

Now, you should understand: This is a beast of a book. I stopped and came back to it over 3 years before I finally got through it. But 3 years, in the course of 15 years living in Japan (and more to come), was worth it for me.

This counter-intuitive structure worked for me. It was easier to learn an English meaning for each kanji, and then learn the pronunciation later when I came across it in other books. I could already write and understand the meaning, so learning the pronunciation was easy.

Sally is learning Chinese and spent 100 hours pouring over Chinese language textbooks, diligently learning every single phonetic rule and grammar structure that governs spoken Chinese. Her pronunciation is solid, and her vocabulary is immense.

But, when she visited her local Chinese market and tried to have a conversation with a native speaker, she could hardly understand a word they said!

And when you start learning on Yoyo Chinese, you'll see we address this RIGHT from the beginning. In Level 1 of our Beginner Course, we serve you the fundamentals on a silver platter in language you can actually understand. We show you how you ALREADY use tones in English, and how to study tones as (not individually) in order to start seeing tones naturally - the way native speakers do.

Not only that, but every pronunciation lesson comes with both Practice and Quiz so you can listen to the pinyin and tones as many times as you'd like and make sure you're able to recall them easily as you review.

Only a few lessons later, we present you with videos of REAL Chinese conversation. But don't worry, we don't just throw you in and leave you to tread water alone!

These videos are ALWAYS broken down line-by-line, and in the Practice section you'll find the Dialogue tool.

Better yet, every single line comes complete with both the original native audio clip, AND a 'slow' version, recorded separately with clearly enunciated pronunciation of the same line so you can practice both and compare.

Throughout the Courses you'll also find our lessons explain the grammar rules you need to master in order to form natural Chinese sentences yourself, like these examples here: how to use the correct word order or how to talk about the past. Learning the rules this way, and helping you develop those native-like instincts is the best way to master the skill conversing in Chinese on the spot.

But something else that's special about Yoyo Chinese is that our lessons are created by BOTH native Chinese AND non-native Chinese language experts. We do this in order to ensure that our students can relate easily to the explanations and insight in the lessons - and it works!

As we described above, mastering the fundamentals using 'textbook Chinese' can certainly be a very effective way to master Chinese speaking.

But believe it or not, Chinese speakers in the real world don't ACTUALLY sound like those pre-recorded audio demonstrations!

They speak quickly. They slur their syllables and tie their tones together. They use incomplete sentences and slather their favorite slang on top for good measure. (Oh, and did we mention that China is a vast country encompassing many different regions, each with their own unique accents?)

If you want to be able to actually understand what is being said, you MUST practice listening to Chinese as it is spoken by real-world people in real-world situations.

But thankfully you don't have to fly to China to do that! Yoyo Chinese's three Conversational Chinese Courses - Beginner, Intermediate & Upper Intermediate - are built around just that: real-life Chinese conversations!

Even in the earliest levels of the Beginner Conversational Course, you'll find video clips of real on-the-street interviews with Chinese locals; and the further into the courses you get, the more native Chinese conversation you'll be exposed to!

The Yoyo Chinese Solution

Chinese is a wonderfully challenging language to learn; and if you want to actually master it, you can't neglect studying either textbook Chinese or real-world Chinese.

If you haven't already, please do come try learning with us at Yoyo Chinese and see how we integrate both of these essential elements into an online platform that helps you ACTUALLY learn Chinese!
