Hi everyone. I have a problem with my external hard drive, a hard drive from Hitachi (1T). My macbook recongnizes the hard drive, I can open the files, see the movies that are saved on it. But it's not possible to put some documents from my mac to the Hitachi. I can't copy, paste or make a new file. It seems to work perfectly on my PC (windows). So I don't have a clue why I can't work on the mac with this external hard drive. I would really appreciate your help.

I am not a Windows user but I do know that for best results, you should format the HDD on a PC in order to use it for both Mac and PC. Essentially you will have to use the PC equivalent of Apples Disk Utility. Perhaps some else will view this post and give you specific instructions or if not, start another post requesting same.

Format it exfat. that is a new format created by MS to get by the fat32 files size limit. The only problem with that format is the drive can get corrupted because it only has one file allocation table and if that gets corrupted all the data on the drive will be non retrievable.

Leave it as it is and connected to your windows pc and network the systems across your home network. That way your mac can read and write to it along with both of your computer being able to share files without having to move the drive from one to the other.

Then on the oldest Windows PC version, right click and format the drive exFAT (if XP, first install the free exFAT from Microsoft) this will provide the correct partition map scheme for all machines can use and also the exFAT format which 4GB+ sized files can be used.

I have a client who was using a Hitachi 2T hard drive for backups on their 2008 small business server. A couple of months ago the drive stopped being recognized by the server. The hard drive works on other machines just fine. I have Google the crap out of this issue, and found that no one seems to understand what is going on.

that is a nice enclosure Don, I may have to get one of those anyway. the drive works perfectly on other machines it only has trouble on this server, and so at this point I think It will be more cost effective to just get a new drive.

Have you tried deleting the volume on another PC then attaching to the SBS and reformatting? The backups on SBS only recognise drives it has formatted itself as backup devices. I had a similar issue a while back but that was on an SB2011 server.

My external 3TB USB 3.0 Hitachi Desk Pro is recognized by Windows 10 device manager but is not recognized by Disk Management. To be more precise, it is unknown in Disk Management thereby incapable of being initialized. See image below.

I have pretty much spent a lot of time gathering information about this, trying everything to find a solution. I have tired Microsoft hardware troubleshoot guides that Microsoft online support recommends, which have been completely ineffective.

I have tested the HDD on three different computers: two laptops with Windows 7, 8/8.1 & 10, Linux GParted and on one Apple MacBook Pro OSX with brand new USB3 cables plugged directly into the computers. The HDD works perfectly on the computers except with Windows 8/8.1 & 10 OS installed.

There many threads online that have somewhat targeted the issue on the power saving functions implemented in Windows 8/10. Even though I have exhausted pretty much every registry tweak I could find on USB power management, this has not solved the problem for my Hitachi Touro Desk Pro nevertheless it still might be connected to core issue in Windows 8/10.

Have 2TB pro. Booted WIN10 1703 with Touro unattached. Admin login. Attached USB and it shows. In Diskmanager change driveletter (i.e. H:) and close out. Shut down and reboot. On my Intel NUC its there, also for other (normal) user. Regards and good luck, JanB. PS the drive letter change comes from tips regarding other HDD problems.

How to recover data safely and easily? Here I recommend you use MiniTool Partition Wizard. It is a professional and reliable data recovery tool that enables you to recover data from external hard drive.

Besides, it is also a comprehensive partition manager that contains a wide range of features. For instance, you can use this program to partition hard drive, convert MBR to GPT, clone a hard drive, and more.

Step 3: After that, you can see the program scanning your disk. While the scan is in progress, you can preview the scanned files and click the Pause or Stop icon to end it when you find all the necessary files.

When faced with the Hitachi external hard drive not detected issue, the first thing you should do is to check the USB port/cable and USB connection. If the connection is loose, remove the external hard drive and reconnect it. If you notice any physical damage to the stock cable, replace it. If the USB port is not working, you can try other available USB ports on your computer.

Step 3: In the pop-up window, choose Search automatically for drivers. Then, your Windows will search your computer and the Internet for the latest driver software for your device. Just follow the on-screen instructions to update the driver to the latest version.

How to format an external hard drive on Windows? Microsoft provides several built-in tools that you can use to format your hard drive, including Diskpart, Disk Management, and File Explorer. Here we take Diskpart as an example:

To format your drive quickly and safely, we recommend you use the MiniTool Partition Wizard. Compared with the tools that come with Windows, MiniTool Partition Wizard has made a great breakthrough in partition management. It helps you format large drives, change drive letters, change cluster size, and more.

Step 1: Launch MiniTool Partition Wizard to enter its main interface. Then select the connected drive from the disk map and click on Format Partition in the left panel.

If formatting the external hard drive to a compatible file system does not resolve the Hitachi external hard drive not detected issue, you can suspect bad sectors on the external hard drive. To check this, you can use the Surface Test feature of the MiniTool Partition Wizard.

Step 2: In the pop-up window, click on the Start Now button to begin scanning bad sectors. If any blocks are marked red, it means there are bad sectors on the hard drive. Then you can follow this guide to fix these bad sectors.

If you have any other useful solutions to this problem, you can share them with us in the following comment zone. If you encounter certain issues while using MiniTool Partition Wizard, you can send us an email via [email protected] to get a quick reply.

Before I updated from Win 8 to Win 10 my Hitachi Touro 500gb portable hard drive worked fine to make backup's. Now it won't. It shows in Device Manager and in Backup and Support(windows 7) in Control Panel but in the latter there is a red cross against it and 'Back up now' is greyed out. It will not work at all. Is there any way I can get it to work rather than buy a new one?

Hi Visruth-been a while since you were kind enough to help me with my portable drive that wouldn't work after I downloaded Windows 10. I didn't have any joy at the time but in the latest edition of Computeractive Issue 475 11-24 May on page 70 there are instructions that worked for me.

I have a Hitachi external Hard Drive, powered by 2 USB leads. On my previous (XP) computer, I only needed to plug one of these into a USB socket; however on my new (Windows 8) computer I need to plug both in, otherwise the drive 'complains' with a kind of rhythmic squeaking noise.

When the computer is powered down, the hard drive again makes this noise instead of switching off. It doesn't sound too healthy so I usually end up unplugging the hard drive until next time I boot up, although I don't always remember to do this, so it stays complaining all night.

It might also be worth trying the drives manufacturer's drive test software as it will sometimes pick on a failing drive. (sometimes included as an installer on the external hard drive or maybe this one here). However drive self tests won't always tell you if a drive is failing so I would take any results with a pinch of salt.

"I have the Hitachi Touro Desk Pro and also the Hitachi Touro Desk. The standard Hitachi Touro Desk drive is recognized and works fine. The "Pro" is recognized but does not do anything when trying to access it.

Have you ever been bothered by this kind of error - your drive is connected but not working on your computer. If you are one of these victims, you must read on to get the tested and effective solutions. You can fix Hitachi hard drive not working/recognized problems with ease.

Before you start, you'd better restore data from the Hitachi hard drive first. The operations may cause the Hitachi hard drive data loss. Here, reliable EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard - EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard can bring all your lost files back immediately.

When your Hitachi is not working in your File Explorer, you must check the disk in Disk Management. If the external hard drive not showing up in This PC, but appears in Disk Management, you can solve the error with simple steps.

As I have mentioned before, if your Hitachi hard drive is shown as unallocated/not initialized disk/offline, you can easily solve this error by initializing it and create a new volume. Here are the steps.

Your Hitachi hard drive will not be recognized or detected if the file system is not compatible with Windows 10/8/7. Thus, you must know the differences between FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS. Then, format your hard drive to a compatible file system.
