Abstract:  

Professor James Liu will present the results of a 2020 national online survey in New Zealand that focused on the three commonly used labels to describe people of European ancestry in the country: Pakeha, New Zealand European, and New Zealander. The survey aimed to understand the political and social meanings associated with these labels and their relationship with Maori and decolonization movements. The conference will discuss the implications of the findings for demographers and social psychologists and theorize about how social representations of these three terms produce and reproduce significant elements of the political psychology of New Zealand today.
