Cues and Sexual Orientation: Unpacking the 'Gay Voice' Stereotype, Stigma, and Discrimination
In
this lecture, I will begin by exploring how people perceive voice as a cue for sexual orientation and the processes involved in categorising speakers as either gay or straight. I will then examine the consequences of such voice-based categorisation, focusing
on stereotyping and discrimination. I will present research that reveals negative biases against individuals perceived as "gay-sounding" and discuss how sexual minorities navigate situations where their voices lead others to assume their sexual orientation.
Finally, I will introduce recent studies that tested strategies to reduce these biases.
