New Video - LXNAV HAWK User Tips Webinar
Overview - LXNAV HAWK is a software upgrade that turns an S10, S100, V8 or V80 vario into the best vario ever - really! HAWK includes vario, wind, and AHRS features. It has been available for a year or 2 now, so it's time for this discussion with experienced HAWK users to learn how it's working, setup and in-flight use tips, etc. I gave a 10 minute overview of the benefits and resources and then opened-up the discussion to get tips from experienced users, and answer questions from potential future users.
This video is available for FREE for everyone.

Hi Paul many thanks for organising and sharing the recent Hawk Webinar. I thought (perhaps incorrectly) that concerning the 9070/V8 setup you were going to change the advice on your webpage for the Vario Audio Source from HAWK to TEK which is how I fly. If one accepts the argument that in the climb Hawk is indicating the best you can get and TEK indicates what you have then in the event of the blue needle reading higher than the red needle you're searching for an increase in the audio rate. If the audio is Hawk you're hearing what you could have which isn't much use?
Thanks
Martin

Hi Martin,

I flew with HAWK at the 20 m Nationals in FL recently and talked about the settings I use with many other HAWK users.  We all had different preferences.  The HAWK settings are something that everyone will do differently.  Since there were many weak thermals during the contest, it was a good test of HAWK in weak conditions.

I tried having the vario audio set to TEK (old TE compensated vario), but found that it wasn't as fast as HAWK, and would indicate a good thermal when I had just bumped-into a horizontal gust.  I decided to go back to using HAWK for the vario audio because it is fast, and tells me when a vario is real or fake.

I changed my V8 to display Vario average instead of HAWK vario average - because in weak thermals the HAWK vario average can be overly optimistic.  The Vario Avg more accurately indicates weather or not a weak thermal is working or not.

My current recommendations for the HAWK settings are found near the bottom of my HAWK webpage here:
