S8 Vario - Oudie Data Transfer

I just installed an S8 Club Vario and hooked it up to my PFLARM and Oudie.  Everything seems to be communicating, I'm getting GPS and Traffic from the PFLARM on to the S8 and Oudie.  But I can't tell what data is being transferred from the S8 to the Oudie. The NMEA stream shows that data is being downloaded from the S8, but without a key to variable names and sentence structure, it's not much help. 

The S8 Manual says it sends McCready, Bugs and Ballast to the Oudie, but how about things like wind, vario and so on?  Also, Oudie Manual doesn't say what the Oudie is doing with data from the S8.  Does it use the wind calculated by the S8 instead of it's own internally calculated wind speed/direction?  

At any rate, if anyone has been down this road before and knows the answers, would appreciate it.

Hi Tom,

The Oudie Terminal screen shows the data coming through. The S8 sends the GPS and FLARM data and LXNAV data to the Oudie.  You should see sentences with GPS data that start with GP and FLARM data sentences that start with FL and LXNAV data sentences that start with LX.  

The Oudie uses the airspeed and GPS data from the vario and FLARM to calculate wind.  It also uses the S8 vario data for the Oudies Thermal Assistant.  The Oudie calculates its own wind using the airspeed and GPS data received.  It is my understanding that it doesn't receive and use wind data from the S8.

If the Oudie and S8 are setup to exchange MacCready data, you should see the MacCready change on either when changed on the other.  The same is true for ballast and bugs.

Thanks Paul.  Do you know if it's possible to turn off the exchange of MacCready data without affecting the transfer of vario or airspeed data?  I'd like to use a "safety MacCready " setting on the Oudie and the normal MacCready setting for the speed to fly calculations on the S8.

Hi Dan,

You can't disable the reception of vario and airspeed data, other than disconnecting.   But you can disable the exchange of data like MacCready using the checkboxes on the Oudie's Hardware screen.

Hi Paul,

On a related issue, to qualify for a badge flight the declaration should be loaded into an IGC flight recorder before takeoff.  In my case I have an Erixx logger providing the GPS source to the S80.  Is it possible to declare a flight on the Oudie (also connected to the S80) and have it downloaded to the logger?

Hi Tim,

Yes.  On the Oudie task edit screen, after setting-up the task, hit the Upload button.  It  should work automatically.  If necessary, it is possible to manually put the S8 into a "pass-through" mode, but I don't think that is usually necessary.
