Subject: Grassroots Action Request: HR1 and Democracy Reforms
Dear State Presidents and Executive Directors:
The upcoming 116th Congress could make history with the first comprehensive package of democracy reforms scheduled for 2019, HR1. Since the announcement of HR1, LWVUS has been talking to folks on the Hill and working with partner organizations to help shape the bill’s language and ensure that voting rights are strengthened by this important legislation.
As part of the League’s support for these reforms, we are encouraging you to ask your members to join our coalition partners for in-district drop in meetings around the country. These meetings are a quick way to urge your Congressperson to prioritize democracy reform when they get back in January. To participate, all you need to do is print out the one-page document attached and bring it by your Congressperson’s office.
There’s no need to make an appointment, but if you’re worried about going by yourself you can find others that will also be going at the same time using this website. You can also create your own event that let’s others join you! Please spread this message to your members and encourage them to get involved!
The League is very excited at the prospect of HR1 because it aims to include elements that align with many of the League’s long-held positions, like election modernization, redistricting reform, restoring the Voting Rights Act and creating a public financing system. For more information on the provisions we’re fighting for check out our blog on the topic!
Thanks for all that you do for the League!
