Standard edition and RAC

Paradas mazs jautajums.

Standard edition ir 4 CPU slotu ierobezojums uz klastera. Vai tas
nozime, ka var izveidot 4 node klasteru?
Agrak lasiju par 2 nodes ierobezojumu.

Jā, ja arī pareizi saprotu, tad ierobežojumu node skaitam nav, ir
tikai CPU slotu ierobežojums (tāds pats kā SE) uz visu klāsteri. Zemāk
ir izvilkums no Licensing dokumenta.

Varbūt Edgars Ruņģis var padalīties ar kādu precīzāku informāciju no
paša Oracle dzīlēm :)

Oracle Standard Edition and Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle
RAC)
When used with Oracle Real Application Clusters in a clustered server
environment, Oracle Database Standard Edition requires the use of
Oracle Clusterware. Third-party clusterware management solutions are
not supported.

The license restrictions for Standard Edition must be adhered to. The
maximum number of CPUs defined is for the entire cluster; it is not a
per node maximum.

Automatic Storage Management (ASM) must be used to manage all database-
related files. Third-party volume managers and file systems are not
supported for this purpose. ASM is required for the storage of:

Database data files

Online logs

Archive logs

Control files

Server parameter files (spfiles)

Flash Recovery Area

RAW disk partitions are required for:

Voting disk

Oracle Cluster Registry

Local storage must be used for:

Oracle Home

Trace files

Dump files

No Oracle-maintained copies of any of the above files can exist in any
other locations, with the following exception: Customers who want to
manually script maintenance of a standby database can create a second
copy of their archive logs outside of ASM on a local file system only,
designated by the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n parameter.

RMAN backups of files can reside on either a local or network mounted
file system.

No other cluster software can be installed on the system, including,
OCFS, OCFS2, third-party clusterware, third-party cluster volume
managers, and third-party cluster file systems.

Teorētiski var izveidot 4 node klasteri. Praktiski, ir dažas
problēmas. Divas galvenās problēmas ir:

* praktiski nav iespējams nopirkt serveru ar single core procesoru;
* ja Oracle griežas uz single core procesora, tad pazūd visas
priekšrocības no paralēlas apstrādes (SMP), no fakta, ka DBWR/LGWR var
rakstīt uz diska, praktiski neietekmējot lietotāja procesus. Problēmu
palielina fakts, ka tev ir jābūt vismaz 2 instancēm (ASM+DB).
Bet teorētiski var mēģināt...

Edgar, SE licensesana ir par slotiem. Ta, itka var izveidot klasteru
ar 4 serveriem katram 1 (4-6 cores) proc

Yep SE gadījumā tā ir foršā "fīča", Edgars (tas, kurš oriģinālā
jautāja) varēs izveidot kaut ko līdzīgu šim :)

sadalit resursus starp lietotaju sistemam.

Ir diezgan sarežģīti pateikt, kāpēc Julian Dyke ielika 2 node
ierobežojumu savos slaidos. Nekur saiti uz šādu ierobežojumu man
atrast nav izdevies. Pat apskatījos viņa grāmatu, tur arī ir pieminēts
tikai par 4 CPU ierobežojumu.

Šeit ir intervija ar diviem Oracle ne sales cilvēkiem un viņi pat
saka, ka šāda konfigurācija ir iespējama:

Does RAC work with Oracle Standard Edition?

Oracle Standard Edition, the edition of Oracle for the SMB market,
comes with a license for a 4 node RAC cluster. A standard edition
license allows up to 4 CPU sockets in a cluster. Those 4 sockets may
be in a single server or in two, three or four servers. As long as
your cluster does not exceed 4 sockets, RAC is included as part of
your Standard Edition License.
