Can anyone think of a way to track a nerf dart? Say, hypothetically,
that in an office situation darts started disappearing and you wanted
to find which drawer or trash can they were being deposited in without
rummaging through everyones stuff. The chip in the dart would have to
be small and light enough to not appear modified and the tracker will
need to be able to pick it up from a 5-10' distance.

LMAO
Nerf Dart Tracking....

Heck, that would make it easier to find the 50+ darts I lost at the last Humans vs Zombies game... Just walk the field with the tracker...

I'm assuming this is undercover shenanigans... Skip dart tracking and
set up a sting operation.

Plan B is to kidnap some stuffed animals/figurines from random desks
and hold them ransom until the darts are returned.

How about just setting up a hidden camera to find out who has been pilfering the

They use air-pressure sensors on cars that are built into the tire.
They don't require direct power source.

The transceiver they use is capable of reacting to two different
frequencies, one is used for comm the other is use to inductively
charge the circuitry in the tire sensor long enough to check the
pressure and reply.

Same idea as smart-cards and rfid tags... you are limited to about 2-3
feet though, and you need some really fancy antenna and inductor
designer to be able to make both coils in a package small enough to
fit into a nerf dart... weight is going to be about a gram or two.

(From my experience to package up a small sensor like that it will
cost you about $40 or per unit... don't think it is worth to do it for
a bunch of nerf darts though :)

das it... no more serious answer here.

Lazy solution, dip the darts in some solution that has an obnoxious
smell. Extra points if you can make it active only with lack of light
or presence of stale air. So everybody will quickly know where it is
hidden.

Why not attach a watch battery and a blinking LED. When the fight is over, just turn off the lights, and look for the ominous glow.

Something like this perhaps?

http://mhlnews.com/transport-packaging/mhm_imp_1177/

(annoying ad at the beginning unless you have an ad-blocker)

I've been considering something like this to make for carbon-fiber arrows.  It'd be a lot easier to find one that went into the grass if you didn't have to rely on trying to find the metal tip (and in the meantime finding every old nail and bolt that has found its way out there).  I'd love to make something like this; I figure at the very least I could sell the idea to Easton.  :-)

Blenster

PS Cheap, too; I just want lots and lots of arrows...  :-D

For arrows that'd still be better than a metal detector...  :-)  I'd rather sweep the ground with a modified RDIF reader than a metal-detector and know I was only going to get a tone/light/whatever when I actually found the arrow (and not just anything ferrous).

I don't know how much distance you can get from something light enough to mount on an arrow or nerf dart without beginning to negatively impact performance of the projectile in a significant way.  Perhaps one with a longer antenna integrated?  Paper-thin but several inches long might work?  I honestly don't know; I've not played around with these yet and I'm just guessing.  :-)

Blenster

PS Hmm, quadcopter programmed to sweep an area looking for the RFID tags would be a neat toy, er tool, to have...  :-)

Just to complicate things a little what you want is triangulation it
is very difficult to, algorithmically, track the source of of a
signal. Most process control system that use RFID rely on lots of
predictive algorithms (or lots of antenna in different locations) to
determine the exact location of a tag. But you are in a controlled
environment where things like signal noise are somewhat controllable.

Just get cow-orkers that are good at returning things to the armory.

From the abstract the IEEE paper seems to be more about Artificial
Intelligence to predict where a target may move in the future rather
than finding its existing location.

My suggestion would be to switch to real darts when you run out of
Nerf darts. This way everyone will ensure you have a healthy supply of
Nerf darts.

Ummm… yeah….

What you are asking for is something that many want, but I am not aware is available inexpensively.

MY application is: I have 4 cats… WHEREINTHEHELL are they hiding? A GPS locator tag gives me “In the house”

I need something MUCH more granular (In the trashcan 😊 )

Well, we looked into them…

  1. Small cats + LARGE tile/holder for collar <> fun
  2. But I tried, after pretty much duct taping it to her
  3. Resolution = In the House/Not In the house
  4. Oh, also tried a “Locater/alarm” thing

When it went off we were treated to a 100MPH cat, running an obstacle course that would put Marines to shame, trying to GET AWAY from the horrible noise that was following her….
