Hey everyone, I'm new to LVL1 and am most interested at the moment in the wood shop.  I have plenty of woodworking experience, but nothing computerized like a CNC.  I'd love to get trained on the ShopBot.  I've done some basic research and have some preliminary questions.

Can someone tell me more about the software?  Does the group use VCarve?  What version?  Do you use the free trial at home to do your design work and the pro version at the shop?

I can be available most nights with a little heads up, can work around your schedule. I plan to start coming on Tuesday nights as often as possible.  Thanks!

Hello Matt. I  have done a few projects on the Shopbot. I  could meet you at the space and show you how it all works. When is good for you?

I can help you with that.
First , for the software, currently using 11.019 (as of 2 weeks ago). You'll need to download the https://www.vectric.com/free-trial/vcarve-pro , and then follow the instructions here https://wiki.lvl1.org/VCarve_Pro

for sheet setup, X is the long side ( 97") and Y is the "across" at 49.

I do all my setup work at home doing this, and just bring a flash drive.

Also, you WILL need to get trained on this, to ensure safety of both you, others, and the machine.  Next week, I should have some time any evening (early ish) and will likely be working on a project using it.

I plan to attend the Tuesday meeting today 2/6.  Will anyone be around to introduce me to the ShopBot and maybe provide the training?  Is that a 10 minute process or a 2 hour process or somewhere in between?

Yes, yes, and it depends. If you have CNC project experience you'll pick it up pretty quickly. Otherwise there is more to absorb.
Haste makes a lot of waste on the Shopbot.

As it happens, I'll be there doing a small project on the Shopbot. Come check it out.  Earlier is  better.

Hey Matt,

I highly recommend you take Mr. McCord up on his offer for tutelage if you guys can coordinate schedules!  He has a lot of experience on the ShopBot.  You  should be able to get the product/keycode for the makerspace version of VCarve from the LVL1 webpage.  Yeah, use the free version at home and save your files on a thumb drive (or email them to yourself!) to use at the shop.  If you have woodworking experience you will likely pick up on things a little quicker than someone without the benefit of said experience, but as far as how long does it take to get trained, thats a question with a lot of variables that go into the answer...in other words, its different for everyone!  I've trained folks on the shopbot that picked up quickly (whether they were looking to do simple project or they were quick studies) and some that still needed help even after several projects.  If you want to do something simple, like cut an "S" (for Schutz) to hang on your door, simple, quick.  However, if you want to use it to build custom cabinets with precise finger joints, dovetailed drawers and raised profiles on the cabinet doors, it's probably gonna take a bit longer!

I would also second Mr. McCord's sentiment that haste makes waste!  By the way, he (Mr. McCord) is a master with the laser as well!

My Pleasure! If you haven't already, check out shopbottools.com for tutorials and free project downloads. Pardon the pun but we just scratched the surface last night. You have good woodshop sense and you'll do more awesome stuff!

Hello Makers,  I am selling a Bob's CNC 24x24.  It's the second one they came up with.  I forgot the model name.  It's completely put together.  Comes with DeWalt Router I even Made a Box for it for dust control.  Anyone interested who wants something they can learn on without breaking the bank.  Please text or Email me.

my number is 502 2719167.  I also have another CNC that is very small about 10x10.  Thank you.
