Hi.

Computer Emergency!!

Have a 2.5" drive from old centos6 laptop. Long story, short. Machine
had weird issue. Turned it off/on, and now get "no bootable device"
err. I know, should have been doing the backup, but this wasn't. (So
this is where we are.0

Given i can;t do a copy of the drive and send it away to some service,
I need to find a good/reliable "local" service. So, I'm turning to the
group to see if anyone either knows of a service, or works for a
company, that might have an IT dept you can ping to see if they have
pointers?

This is a personal laptop/project, not a corporate expense.

I've posted this to various email threads/groups/etc as well.

Thanks.

Hi CK,

The 2.5" drive has been removed from the cenots laptop where it died/stopped working. The drive was working, something happened. Tuned the laptop off/on to restart, ang got the "no bootable device" error.

It has been inserted/tested in an insignia usb slot device for reading/writing 2.5/3.5" drives. The drive doesn't show any information.

https://paste.centos.org/view/c036ae9d  is the paste for the cmds I
ran/tested..  no luck

same cmds/output below:..

If I may, what's your background with data extraction/removal from "dead" drives. Have you experienced this kind of situation, or worse! I want to limit the power cycles to the drive since the event, just in case that may have an impact.

Feel free to hit me up, let's talk.

I'm also looking for a solid (non-scam) Data Recovery Service -- (does this even exist.)

It's been at least 10 years since the last time this happened to me. Been religious with backups since. The outfit who recovered our data ran into a wall, with no parts on hand for the type drive I had sent them. But I had bought two of the same drive and used only the failed one. Sent them the unused spare and they recovered most of the drive's files. Can't remember their name, been too long. There's a link to them on a machine at work. I'll get the name and pass it along next time I'm there.

The outfit we used successfully is acsdata.com. Their web site is still up. With any luck it means they're still in business.

Best of luck.
