Hey all,

My son wants to have a minecraft server set up so he and his friends (no more than 5 at once) can build their own private worlds.  Actually this is for a Latin class project... he wants to build the Coliseum and the Pantheon, etc.  I looked into setting up the server myself, but it looks like a pain the the *(&*&( and I hate JAVA!  So I would like to just pay some hosting company to host this server for me.  After a quick google search, I discovered many minecraft hosting companies.

Do any LVL1ers have any suggestions of a reputable minecraft hosting compnay?  I want to pay <$10/month.  Are there any specific options I need?

Don't we have our own Minecraft server already running?  I've never messed with it but I've heard about it.

We did, for a while, but it quickly atrophied.

I've heard nothing but good things about MineHost, but their cheapest
plan starts at $14/mo.

I ran one on a computer at my house for a little while, its really not hard at all. You just have to make sure you forward the proper port to the server. How long does he need for it to be up?

I signed up for minehost so we will see how that goes.  I looked into doing it myself, but I need it fast.  I will probably keep it up for the summer or so.  Andrew wants me to play!

Brian,

I previously worked for AllGamer.net. They are good for the cost. ($15
a month for 512mb) I agree the server software is a pain, and it takes
a lot of getting used to. Regardless of who you pick though, if they
want a modded server you will be playing PluginCraft(uploading plugins
and configuring them via yaml files) whilst they play minecraft.

That said if you want to just run one at home, there is a control
panel that works really well and runs on linux/osx/windows called
McMyAdmin. It takes most of the pain out of setting it up. The
personal version is free, but limits the server to 8 players.

AllGamer is on IRC at irc.rawrirc.net #allgamer and McMyAdmin is on
irc.esper.net #mcmyadmin
