Today at about 3:15, two of the shelving units collapse.  The contents of all six compartments emptied into the floor.  So far the names I can tell are Mike Lutz, J Coder, John Simpson, B. Hibben, and Blenster. There is a considerable amount of items sent across the floor.  Nolan and I will try to unstack the items, but will leave them in neat groupings near the shelves. If you are one of the people listed, or have contact for these individuals, please come by an claim your items. We don't know whom what belongs.

I'm Blenster/Ben Hibben and will come claim as much as I can remember is mine; I had a few items others were storing on my shelf.

Blenster

Ugh.  Any indication of what caused the failure?

I moved a lot of my stuff to one of the fallen shelves at one end.  Let me know when we sort all the rest out.

My money is on the cause being one of Jose's projects getting out of control.  Watch for a hack-a-day post of him bragging he remotely knocked over a shelf...

My shelf is fine, I can see it in the pic.  If there happens to be another one marked as aaron devrow it should be marked as available.

The uneven floor and possibly an uneven distribution of weight was the likely cause.

If the last time I looked was any indication, storing 4,824.56 kilos of stuff on a shelf rated for 50 lbs MAX

might have played a role

There was another shelf that looked like it was leaning over like those 2 were yesterday I pulled it apart just for funsies. It appears the the slope of the floor runs away from the wall bending the tubes on the shelves forward. If anyone has a plan on how to safely level the remaining shelves it may be useful.

Block the front ends with shim? Maybe Clark was right. We have to bolt them down?

shimming i can see, bolting them down would have just bolted them in at the same angles they just failed at, unless they where already shimmed before they become bolted

I feel that this thread has taken a mocking attitude toward my participation in the hacker space.

For the record, I do not store unregulated nuclear material on my shelf.

For the record, my shelf didn't collapse.

For the record, I was nowhere near the shelf at the time of the collapse.

For the record, I could ramble on but the Big Bang Theory is on.

Pat, I did some science and your estimate above is roughly equal to 661 bowling balls. This kind of hyperbole is unnecessary. On this tragic day when we should reflect and honor our fallen things.

OK, pulling back to reasonable discourse (Yes, I WAS joking… but you know, Density of plutonium: 19,816 g/cm3  with some math,  1 in3 of Plutonium =  324.726 Kilograms,  so Jose COULD accomplish that with just 15 cubic inches of ……)

But here’s the thing

When I was packing out, I noticed that that the shelf I was using was seriously bowed I’d estimate about a 1” dip from level, in the middle.

Now, I had my tote-box and the un-needed Vent Hood on that shelf, nothing more. The box was kinda heavy, but I, as arthritic as I am, was able to lift it off the shelf and lower it to the floor without passing out, so it is probably shy of 50 lbs

And the vent hood… 10-15 lbs, at best

So, I think that the 500 lbs is SERIOUSLY optimistic. (could you see me and and another person, both standing on the top shelf of one of them? I think not.)

Sounds like, due to a combination of uneven loading, and uneven footing, excessive pressure was concentrated at a weak spot.

Shimming the front (Shim to level, not adding a 1x strip, which would simply cause the shelves to now apply too much pressure on the rear legs)

AND asking everyone to ensure that they try to distribute the load evenly across their shelf, should work.

For the bowing… It may not be a “fault”, just a cosmetic issue. And it may have only affected the 1 shelf unit I was using… But could a support be somehow mounted “below” each shelf, to help keep the shelf flat?

The obvious question is "How many libraries of congress is it" since we all know in the digital age that's the only metric that matters. It's the information SUPERHIGHWAY, after all, and everyone knows a web of highways is HEAVY! :)

My hypothesis:

I think the warm weather has increased the humidity. The humidity is absorbed by our exposed flooring. The moisture is causing the flooring to warp more than usual. The shelves were last arranged in the winter, with less humidity and therefore less warped flooring. Spring has returned and the moisture spirits don't like our floors and pushed over shelves over.

Case closed.

Btw our shelves are rated for 37.5 bowling balls or 4466 Microsoft Encarta CD-ROMs.

I remember putting some of those shelves together.  As I recall, some of the ends were so tight a fit, they had to be squished a bit to get to fit in.  The shelves I put together were at the end, not the center though.  but I imagine other assemblers may have had the same issue.  If any of the verticals are compromised given the cheap plastic, raising the front edge may not fix things entirely if the things warp in the middle.  Some of those verticals if they are short or bent might need to be replaced with 1.25" or 1" PVC, assuming they fit the shelves.

LOL @using cd-roms as an example of weight limitations.
Nasty little Moisture sprites! I was just thinking about the state of the floor, a week or so ago, while riding the platform for the Hover Pony that Joseph built (super fun and awesome BTW!). I might be wrong, but the floor seems significantly worse than it did even just last fall. I recalled that there were a lot of leaks in the ceiling over the last year, and figured they were probably a leading contributor. Were those leaks ever fixed?
