My wife is interested in working with cutter/plotters. We found a good
deal on an old CriCut and I found the following links:

https://github.com/Arlet/Freecut
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UiKXeMWNb8

Basically, it's a custom firmware for the CriCut Personal which allows
you to control the device from your PC/Mac/Linux computer. Has anyone
on the group done this before? I'm seriously considering doing it just
for the heck of it.

I have not used freecut but I did use libcutter and was able to control the cricut cake.

I have a HP printer that is about 30 inches wide.  I will loan that to the hacker space.  The software we used was on a 286, so it must be simple.  I have an unused license for Mach3,

I hear this a lot but I wonder how true it is: The software we used was on a 286, so it must be simple.

Seems like often the software is not simple because the developers had to know how to get more from the system.

I have a large format vinyl/stencil cutter at home. Somewhere with it is the software… I will fing it and bring it in. Takes any vector drawing as input… works VERY well… (Been a while though)

WOW! My wife will have a blast with that. But regardless, we still
want to hack the CriCut to provide a nice generic cutter for home.

Thanks Pat!!!

The software pack is, IIRC, a generic tool... you can set it up to drive LOTS of xy cutters... (Presets or manual)
Operates thru the serial port though, so them there new fangled computers may not work......

(Now I REALLY need to Find it :) )
