A friend that works with Danielle, Herman, and I has offered to teach a crash course on sewing Sunday, June 2, 5:30-8:30. She's already set up an eventbrite page, she means business. Let her know if there is any problem with the date (nothing on the calendar) or the price, which looks to be pretty much nothing.

Event Details

A basic crash course on sewing in a shoot-from-the hip style. Learn how to finesse your fabric into submission on the deck of a straight stitch sewing machine. No technical stuff, just how to move your hands and line up your seams to make it all come together.

No experience necessary. Enthusiasm required.

Bring 2 1/2 yards of cheap fabric and a spool of thread to match. (fleece and flannel is ideal if you are a novice. Avoid ultra thin, slippery, metallic or 2 way stretch fabrics if you are not up for a challenge.)

I will bring 2 machines or you can BYO.

Workshop Host: Jael harrington
Sewing from the delicate age of 7, I have long since abandoned proper patterns and sewing rules. I'm not a quilter, I'm not a historically accurate period piece seamstress or even a tailor. I'm a fabric hacker. I've built  giant inflatables and repaired the mechanical bladder filled costumes from Cats. I also make my children clothing, but mostly because they are still too young to be embarrassed by anything.
Credentials include Teaching sewing in Baltimore County Public schools, Student teaching at the Maryland Institute College of Art and working with Mary Glossner, High priestess of Fabric manipulation.

Yep, for those who don't know, Jael is amazingly talented and knowledgable. I see her doing everything from drywall/plumbing/electrical work to freehand drawing photo-realistic skeletal and muscle pieces for kids to assemble. She is going to try to come the the meeting on Tuesday as is Chip Muzzey from the KSC Exhibits Dept. I don't think he's been there that long, but is a pretty impressive guy... an EE who worked at MIT. Both of these folks would be tremendous assets to LVL1, I think. I've been trying to get them to come for a long time. So give them back massages and feed them grapes and shit if they show up.

Many of you guys probably know Herman who works in that department. It's staffed by a bunch of weird group of young or retired geniuses/polymaths that should be LVL1 members or regulars. I don't know where or how they find these people.

Just a reminder, this is happening tomorrow. Bring 2/5 yards of fabric and some thread.

Does it have to be a certain type of fabric?

She gives some guidelines on good types of fabric.  (fleece and flannel is ideal if you are a novice. Avoid ultra thin, slippery, metallic or 2 way stretch fabrics if you are not up for a challenge.)

You'll walk away having made a shirt.
